چکیده

Hypertension, oedema, or serious potassium loss has been reported in up to 50% of patients receiving carbenoxolone sodium, 300 mg. daily, for the treatment of gastric ulcer (Doll, Hill, Hutton, and Underwood, 1962; Doll, Hill, and Hutton, 1965; Turpie and Thomson, 1965; Horwich and Galloway, 1965). According to Turpie and Thomson's observations on 10 patients, these side effects can also occur with a dosage of 150 mg. daily for four weeks, and they concluded that carbenoxolone sodium should only be used when close clinical supervision and biochemical facilities are available. This paper reports the effects on 50 out-patients treated with carbenoxolone sodium, 150 mg. daily for six weeks, as part of a long-term prospective study of the medical management of gastric ulcers based on this drug.

Effect of low dosage of carbenoxolone sodium on gastric ulcer healing and acid secretion.

Carbenoxolone sodium has been shown to cause significant healing of benign gastric ulcers in three short-term, double-blind clinical trials restricted to ambulant outpatients (Doll, Hill, Hutton, and Underwood, 1962; Doll, Hill, and Hutton, 1965; Doll, Langman, and Shawdon, 1968). The degree of healing in the treated groups was similar to that obtained with inpatient treatment, including bed re...

Double-blind trial of carbenoxolone sodium capsules in duodenal ulcer therapy, based on endoscopic diagnosis and follow-up.

A high-dose double-blind trial of carbenoxolone sodium capsules (Duogastrone) in the treatment of duodenal ulceration was combined with endoscopic diagnosis and follow-up. Thirty-one ambulant patients with an endoscopically visible duodenal ulcer were allocated at random to a 12-week course of treatment with either carbenoxolone sodium 300 mg daily or a placebo. Symptomatic and endoscopic follo...

Treatment of gastric ulcer with carbenoxolone: antagonistic effect of spironolactone.

Controlled trials have shown that the rate of healing of gastric ulcers is increased by treatment with carbenoxolone sodium, but that fluid retention is produced as a side effect sufficiently often to limit the freedom with which the drug can be prescribed (Doll, Hill, Hutton, and Underwood, 1962; Doll, Hill, and Hutton, 1965; Horwich and Galloway, 1965). We have, therefore, sought a method of ...

Controlled comparison of cimetidine and carbenoxolone sodium in gastric ulcer.

Fifty-four outpatients with endoscopically diagnosed benign gastric ulcer were allocated at random to treatment with either cimetidine 800 mg daily for six weeks or carbenoxolone sodium 300 mg daily for one week then 150 mg daily for five weeks. Ulcers were reassessed by endoscopy at the end of the trial. The endoscopist was unaware of the treatment and did not take part in the clinical care of...
