Low Divergence Laser-plasma-based Beams

چکیده
We discuss the mechanisms, applications, and extraction of low-divergence laser-plasma-based electron beams that represent our past, current, and future research activities in the Center for Ultrafast Optical Science at the University of Michigan. We show experimentally that these beams have superior transverse emittance of 0.06 pi mm•mrad, along with nC charge, suitable for various applications, like pulse radiolysis. We also report progress in implementing a scheme to produce a mono-energetic electron beam [1], along with an electromagnetic QQQDD spectrometer system especially built for characterizing such beam.!

Counter - Propagation of Electron and C 02 Laser Beams in a Plasma Channel
A high-energy C 0 2 laser is channeled in a capillary discharge. Occurrence of guiding conditions at a relatively low plasma density ( ~ 1 0 ' ~ ~ m ~ ) is confirmed by MHD simulations. Divergence of relativistic electron beam changes depending on the plasma density. Counter-propagation of the electron and laser beams inside the plasma channel results in intense x-ray generation.

متن کاملThe development of laser- and beam-driven plasma accelerators as an experimental field
Since its inception in the early 1980s, the field of plasma-based particle accelerators has made remarkable advances. Robust plasma accelerating structures can now be excited over centimeter scales using short laser pulses and over meter scales using ultrarelativistic particle beams. Accelerating fields in excess of tens of GV/m can be sustained over these lengths. Laser-driven plasma accelerat...
متن کاملLOW ENERGY SPREAD 100 MeV-1 GeV ELECTRON BUNCHES FROM LASER WAKEFIELD ACCELERATION AT LOASIS*
Experiments at the LOASIS laboratory of LBNL recently demonstrated production of 100 MeV electron beams with low energy spread and low divergence from laser wakefield acceleration. The radiation pressure of a 10 TW laser pulse guided over 10 diffraction ranges by a plasma density channel was used to drive an intense plasma wave (wakefield), producing acceleration gradients on the order of 100 G...
متن کامل100 MeV Injector Cell for a Staged Laser Wakefield Accelerator
A 100 MeV electron laser wakefield injector based on a sub-millimeter gas cell is presented. The gas cell, used mainly to overcome the density inhomogeneity associated with gas jets, is capable of yielding a homogeneous plasma source with densities less than 2 x 10 cm. Sharp step plasma density boundaries were obtained by using the laser to drill the gas cell pinholes as small as 100 μm in diam...
