Methods for Creating Semantic Orientation Dictionaries
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe and compare different methods for creating a dictionary of words with their corresponding semantic orientation (SO). We tested how well different dictionaries helped determine the SO of entire texts. To extract SO for each individual word, we used a common method based on pointwise mutual information. Mutual information between a set of seed words and the target words was calculated using two different methods: a NEAR search on the search engine Altavista (since discontinued); an AND search on Google. These two dictionaries were tested against a manually annotated dictionary of positive and negative words. The results show that all three methods are quite close, and none of them performs particularly well. We discuss possible further avenues for research, an d also point out some potential problems in calculating pointwise mutual information using Google. ∗ In Proceedings of Fifth International Conference on Language Resources and Evaluation (LREC 2006). Semantic Diversity versus Visual Diversity in Visual Dictionaries
Visual dictionaries are a critical component for image classification/retrieval systems based on the bag-of-visualwords (BoVW) model. Dictionaries are usually learned without supervision from a training set of images sampled from the collection of interest. However, for large, general-purpose, dynamic image collections (e.g., the Web), obtaining a representative sample in terms of semantic conc...
متن کاملBuilding Tagged Linguistic Unit Databases for Sentiment Detection
Despite the obvious business value of visualizing similarities between elements of evolving information spaces and mapping these similarities e.g. onto geospatial reference systems, analysts are often more interested in how the semantic orientation (sentiment) towards an organization, a product or a particular technology is changing over time. Unfortunately, popular methods that process unstruc...
متن کاملLexicon-Based Methods for Sentiment Analysis
We present a lexicon-based approach to extracting sentiment from text. The Semantic Orientation CALculator (SO-CAL) uses dictionaries of words annotated with their semantic orientation (polarity and strength), and incorporates intensification and negation. SO-CAL is applied to the polarity classification task, the process of assigning a positive or negative label to a text that captures the tex...
متن کاملLexical Based Semantic Orientation of Online Customer Reviews and Blogs
Rapid increase in internet users along with growing power of online review sites and social media has given birth to sentiment analysis or opinion mining, which aims at determining what other people think and comment. Sentiments or Opinions contain public generated content about products, services, policies and politics. People are usually interested to seek positive and negative opinions conta...
متن کاملOn multiword lexical units and their role in maritime dictionaries
Multi-word lexical units are a typical feature of specialized dictionaries, in particular monolingual and bilingual maritime dictionaries. The paper studies the concept of the multi-word lexical unit and considers the similarities and differences of their selection and presentation in monolingual and bilingual maritime dictionaries. The work analyses such issues as the classification of multi-w...
