چکیده

As global change induces more and more extreme climate events (Field et al., 2012), temporal variability in precipitation is likely becoming larger than ever. How land ecosystems respond to the stronger temporal variability in precipitation is a new frontier research area for ecologists (Reichstein et al., 2013; Niu et al., 2014). In this issue of New Phytologist Knapp et al. (pp. 41–47) frame a new conceptual model to understand responses of abovegroundnet primary production (ANPP) to stronger temporal variability in precipitation.

Effects of Land Cover and Regional Climate Variations on Long-Term Spatiotemporal Changes in Sagebrush Ecosystems

This research investigated the effects of climate and land cover change on variation in sagebrush ecosystems. We combined information of multi-year sagebrush distribution derived from multitemporal remote sensing imagery and climate data to study the variation patterns of sagebrush ecosystems under different potential disturbances. We found that less than 40% of sagebrush ecosystem changes invo...

Land Use Monitoring using Satellite Imagery and Its Relationship with Drought in the Doiraj Watershed of Eilam Province

Today, there are many factors affecting watersheds, consequently changing natural ecosystems succession. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of drought events on land use changes at Doiraj Watershed of Ilam Province from 1996 to 2015. For this purpose, Landsat satellite images were used for land use change monitoring and Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was applied for dro...

On the Response of European Vegetation Phenology to Hydroclimatic Anomalies

Climate change is expected to alter vegetation and carbon cycle processes, with implications for ecosystems. Notably, understanding the sensitivity of vegetation to the anomalies of precipitation and temperature over different land cover classes and the corresponding temporal response is essential for improved climate prediction. In this paper, we analyze vegetation response to hydroclimatic fo...

Asymmetric responses of primary productivity to precipitation extremes: A synthesis of grassland precipitation manipulation experiments.

Climatic changes are altering Earth's hydrological cycle, resulting in altered precipitation amounts, increased interannual variability of precipitation, and more frequent extreme precipitation events. These trends will likely continue into the future, having substantial impacts on net primary productivity (NPP) and associated ecosystem services such as food production and carbon sequestration....

ENSO elicits opposing responses of semi-arid vegetation between Hemispheres

Semi-arid ecosystems are key contributors to the global carbon cycle and may even dominate the inter-annual variability (IAV) and trends of the land carbon sink, driven largely by the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The linkages between dynamics of semi-arid ecosystems and climate at the hemispheric scale however are not well known. Here, we use satellite data and climate observations from...
