FieldNote: a Handheld Information System for the Field
نویسندگان
چکیده
Research fieldwork in disciplines such as archaeology and the environmental sciences often involves construction of a GIS for analysis and visualisation of field observations. At either end of this process, initial planning and the final production of a synthesised model and published results are well supported by conventional GIS. In between, much effort is often expended on data entry, format conversion and other tedious tasks before the analysis can begin. Multiple field visits and the need to collate the work of different specialists may significantly increase the complexity and tedium of these tasks. The FieldNote system described here integrates handheld tools for data collection and re-use into the process in a way that is minimally intrusive on the fieldworkers normal tasks. The concept of context-awareness is used to maximise the automation of data collection and retrieval in the field, and to enable rapid sharing of information between co-workers.

FieldNote: extending a GIS into the field
The Mobile Computing in a Fieldwork Environment (MCFE) project (note 1) was introduced in a paper at the 1997 CAA conference in which we described the development of prototype context-aware FieldNote systems [Ryan et al. 1998]. These are intended for use in both student and research fieldwork, providing facilities for instruction, data recording and information retrieval tailored to the users’ ...

متن کاملVirtual Redlining in Civil Engineering using the Handheld Augmented Reality Device Vesp ́R
We propose an outdoor demo enabling redlining tasks for civil engineering. Field workers of utility companies are regularly engaged in outdoor tasks such as network planning and inspection of underground infrastructure. Redlining is the term used for manually annotating either printed paper maps or a 2D geographic information system on a notebook computer taken to the field. Either of these app...
متن کاملAugmented Reality to assist Utilities Field Personnel
Employing mobile augmented reality (AR) to assist utility field personnel is a novel approach. This approach has become considerable in recent years with the advent of AR applications running on handheld computing devices. Unlike conventional solutions, AR provides a more intuitive interface to access complex underground utility network data in the field. As a result, common field tasks concern...
متن کاملHandheld Augmented Reality in Civil Engineering
This paper presents an overview of a project focusing on research on the next-generation field information system for utility companies, providing mobile workforces with capabilities for on-site inspection and planning. For achieving this aim, handheld Augmented Reality technology is used for on-site visualization of geometric and semantic attributes of geospatial 3D models on the user’s handhe...
