Density-Based and Transport-Based Core-Periphery Structures in Networks

چکیده
Networks often possess mesoscale structures, and studying them can yield insights into both structure and function. It is most common to study community structure, but numerous other types of mesoscale structures also exist. In this paper, we examine core-periphery structures based on both density and transport. In such structures, core network components are well-connected both among themselves and to peripheral components, which are not well-connected to anything. We examine core-periphery structures in a wide range of examples of transportation, social, and financial networks-including road networks in large urban areas, a rabbit warren, a dolphin social network, a European interbank network, and a migration network between counties in the United States. We illustrate that a recently developed transport-based notion of node coreness is very useful for characterizing transportation networks. We also generalize this notion to examine core versus peripheral edges, and we show that the resulting diagnostic is also useful for transportation networks. To examine the properties of transportation networks further, we develop a family of generative models of roadlike networks. We illustrate the effect of the dimensionality of the embedding space on transportation networks, and we demonstrate that the correlations between different measures of coreness can be very different for different types of networks.

Sampling from social networks’s graph based on topological properties and bee colony algorithm
In recent years, the sampling problem in massive graphs of social networks has attracted much attention for fast analyzing a small and good sample instead of a huge network. Many algorithms have been proposed for sampling of social network’ graph. The purpose of these algorithms is to create a sample that is approximately similar to the original network’s graph in terms of properties such as de...
متن کاملThe Application of Complex Networks Analysis to Assess Iran's Trade and It's Most Important Trading Partners in Asia
The existing trade models suggest that for tradable goods potential partners can be many, but eventually only one (the one offering the best price) should be selected, therefore relatively few (unidirectional) trade links will appear between countries. If the structure of international trade flows describes as a network, trade link would give rise between countries. This paper exploit recently-...
متن کاملComputing core/periphery structures and permutation tests for social relations data
The core/periphery structure is ubiquitous in network studies. The discrete version of the concept is that individuals in a group belong to either the core, which has a high density of ties, or to the periphery, which has a low density of ties. The density of ties between the core and the periphery may be either high or low. If the core/periphery structure is given a priori, then there is no pr...
متن کاملCore-periphery Structures: Operationalizing patterns of dependence and dominance in binary and valued networks
With origins in the postwar development discourse, the core-periphery concept has spread all over the social, and increasingly the natural, sciences. Used initially to denote two broad regional categories distinguished by differences in socio-economic parameters, its structural connotations paved way for more relational, and less attributional, specifications. As reflected in the blockmodeling ...
متن کاملResilience of Core-Periphery Networks in the Case of Rich-Club
Core-periphery networks are structures that present a set of central and densely connected nodes, namely the core, and a set of non-central and sparsely connected nodes, namely the periphery. The rich-club refers to a set in which the highest degree nodes show a high density of connections. Thus, a network that displays a rich-club can be interpreted as a core-periphery network in which the cor...
