Homeostasis and Stability
نویسنده
چکیده
Homeostasis is known as a key concept in biology and well-documented on various levels of biological organization. Moreover, homeostasis appears to be strongly related to the stability of biological systems. Stability, on the other hand, is one of the basic concepts in dynamical systems theory. The aim of this paper is to link these two fundamental concepts. A simple model is proposed representing a cell or an organism as a selectively open self-regulating unit in a uctuating environment. The idea is that the system can maintain itself simlutaneously open und homostatic by appropiatly adjusting its sensitivity to external signals. The particular term adibatic stability is introduced and discussed. For a large class of dynamical systems, it is shown that adiabatic stability implies homeostasis. A simple condition is given under which a system is adiabatically stable. It follows that a given system is adiabatically stable with respect to only a certain class of environmental perturbations characterized by their strength and rapidity. In particular, as a consequence of its internal adaptive behaviour, a system can be destabilized by su ciently weak and rapidly uctuating perturbations.

Involvement of Iron-Containing Proteins in Genome Integrity in Arabidopsis Thaliana
The Arabidopsis genome encodes numerous iron-containing proteins such as iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster proteins and hemoproteins. These proteins generally utilize iron as a cofactor, and they perform critical roles in photosynthesis, genome stability, electron transfer, and oxidation-reduction reactions. Plants have evolved sophisticated mechanisms to maintain iron homeostasis for the assembly of ...
متن کاملPlasma membrane Ca2+‐ATPase 1 is required for maintaining atrial Ca2+ homeostasis and electrophysiological stability in the mouse
KEY POINTS The role of plasma membrane Ca2+ -ATPase 1 (PMCA1) in Ca2+ homeostasis and electrical stability in atrial tissue has been investigated at both organ and cellular levels in mice with cardiomyocyte-specific deletion of PMCA1 (PMCA1cko ) The PMCA1cko hearts became more susceptible to atrial arrhythmic stress conditions than PMCA1loxP/loxP hearts. PMCA1 deficiency alters cellular Ca2+ ho...

متن کاملSupplementary Information: Stability of neuronal networks with homeostatic regulation
Here we 1) derive stability conditions for the network with a non-linear f/I curve, and 2) the tighter stability criterion which be obtained by considering only the slowest mode of the system. Qualitatively, for the 3-dimensional system a criterion exists based on the envelope of the non-linearity. For the full network, the criterion is based on the maximum slope of the non-linearity and this i...
