چکیده

S TUDIES IN RABBITS HAVE SHOWN that the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii is able to parasitize peripheral blood leukocytes.’ In humans, parasitemia caused by this organism has been demonstrated in an asymptomatic blood donor,2 and in a woman who delivered a congenitally infected infant.3 Despite these observations, no cases of acute toxoplasmosis acquired via transfusion of blood products have been reported previously. We have recently observed four patients with acute leukemia who developed toxoplasmosis following transfusion of leukocytes (WBC) from donors with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). These transfusions had been given in an attempt to treat granulocytopenia complicated by bacterial infection.4 Serologic data, obtained retrospectively, suggest that the transfused leukocytes were the source of the parasite in the recipients.

Toxoplasmosis as a complication of transfusion in hemodialysis patients

Background Toxoplasma Gondi is an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite that is one of the most important protozoa of blood and tissue. The medical importance of this parasite is considered from two aspects of congenital defects and opportunities among those with congenital immune deficiency. Depending on the mode of transmission through blood and the risk of infection to Toxoplasma Gondi...

Cerebral Toxoplasmosis in an HIV Positive Patient: A Case Report and Review of Pathogenesis and Laboratory Diagnosis

Toxoplasmosis is caused by Toxoplasma gondii, an obligate intracellular protozoan of worldwide distribution. The prevalence of seropositivity for antibodies against T. gondii has been estimated at 3% to 67% and the rate of seroprevalence as high as 90% in Western Europe and tropical countries. Transmission to humans occurs primarily by ingestion of undercooked meat that contains tissue cysts or...

Blood transfusion is commonly implemented to manage life and health-threatening conditions on a rapid and short-term basis. Over the years, ongoing technical advances have dramatically improved transfusion medicine to provide more safety and effectiveness. However, transfusion is still complicated with different adverse events that mainly induced by the presence of allogeneic leukocytes in the ...
