Cern Ps Laser Ion Source Development
نویسندگان
چکیده
CERN, together with ITEP and TRINITI (Russia), is developing a CO2 laser ion source. The key design parameters are: 1.4×10 ions of Pb in a pulse of 5.5 μs, with a 4-rms emittance of 0.2×10 rad m, working at a repetition rate of 1 Hz. This device is considered as one candidate source for LHC heavy ion operation. The status of the laser development, the experimental set-up of the source consisting of the target area and its illumination, the plasma expansion area and extraction, beam transport and ion pre-acceleration by an RFQ, will be given.

EUROPEAN ORGANIZATION FOR NUCLEAR RESEARCH CERN/PS 2001-061 Comparison of Simulation Codes for the Beam Dynamics of Low-Energy Ions
Results are presented of the simulation of low–energy ion dynamics with three different codes: KOBRA, IGUN and CPO. To share work between different codes one needs to be confident that they agree. For test cases, good agreement was found between the codes and analytical solutions. Where possible, results have been compared to experimental data from the CERN Laser Ion Source. These simulations a...
متن کاملDevelopment of the C(6+) laser ablation ion source for the KEK digital accelerator.
A laser ion source that provides a fully ionized carbon ion beam is under joint development at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization and Brookhaven National Laboratory. Long-pulse (6 ns) and short-pulse (500 ps) laser systems were tested by using them to irradiate a graphite target. Notable differences between the systems were observed in these experiments. Preliminary experimental ...
متن کاملDevelopment of a High-repetition Rate Tw Co2 Laser Driver for a Compact, Variable Species Ion Source
CO2 laser-driven ion acceleration has been used to generate monoenergetic, MeV proton beams from a gas jet plasma. Use of a gas jet is advantageous because it offers interactions at a density around the critical plasma density for 10 μm pulses (10 cm) and can be run at a repetition rate of 1-100 Hz. This opens the possibility to create a variable species ion source easily switchable from proton...
متن کاملStatus of the CO2 Laser Ion Source at CERN
A laser ion source using a CO2 laser focused onto a solid target is under study at CERN for the production of high currents of highly-charged heavy ions, for possible use in the pre-injector for LHC. A new expansion and extraction layout was installed in this test facility, improving the alignment and making the target to extraction distance more flexible. A two solenoid beam transport system w...
