Magnetoactive elastomers with periodic and random microstructures

چکیده
We investigate the behavior of magnetoactive elastomers (MAEs) with periodic and random distributions of circular and elliptical fibers. For the MAEs with periodic microstructures, we develop finite element models and determine the local fields as well as the effective properties of MAEs with rectangular and quasi-hexagonal unit cells. For the MAEs with random microstructures, we derive a closed-form expression for the effective response making use of a recently developed theory (Ponte Castañeda and Galipeau, 2011). In particular, we determine the responses to pure shear loading in the presence of a magnetic field, both of which are aligned with the geometric axes of the fibers, and examine the roles of the deformation, concentration, particle shape, and distribution on the magnetostriction, actuation stress, and the magnetically induced stiffness of the composite. We show that the coupling effects are of second order in the concentration. This is consistent with the fact that these effects are primarily the result of the interaction between inclusions. We also demonstrate explicitly that the magnetomechanical coupling of these MAEs, when subjected to aligned loading conditions, depends not only on the magnetic susceptibility, but also, crucially, on its derivative with respect to the deformation. As a consequence, we find that the magnetoelastic effects may be quite different, even for composites with similar effective susceptibilities. 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Microscopic and macroscopic instabilities in finitely strained fiber-reinforced elastomers
The present work is a detailed study of the connections between microstructural instabilities and their macroscopic manifestations — as captured through the effective properties — in finitely strained fiber-reinforced elastomers, subjected to finite, planestrain deformations normal to the fiber direction. The work, which is a complement to a previous and analogous investigation by the same auth...
متن کاملPolygonal finite elements for finite elasticity
Nonlinear elastic materials are of great engineering interest, but challenging to model with standard fi nite elements. The challenges arise because nonlinear elastic materials are characterized by nonconvex stored-energy functions as a result of their ability to undergo large reversible deformations, are incompressible or nearly incompressible, and often times possess complex microstructures. ...
متن کاملUltra-Soft PDMS-Based Magnetoactive Elastomers as Dynamic Cell Culture Substrata
Mechanical cues such as extracellular matrix stiffness and movement have a major impact on cell differentiation and function. To replicate these biological features in vitro, soft substrata with tunable elasticity and the possibility for controlled surface translocation are desirable. Here we report on the use of ultra-soft (Young's modulus <100 kPa) PDMS-based magnetoactive elastomers (MAE) as...
متن کاملStability of anisotropic magnetorheological elastomers in finite deformations: A micromechanical approach
We study the stability of magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) undergoing finite deformations in the presence of a magnetic field and derive a general condition for the onset of macroscopic instabilities. In particular, we focus on anisotropic MREs with magnetoactive particles that are aligned along a particular direction, forming chain-like structures. We idealize the microstructure of such an...
متن کاملMicroscopic and macroscopic instabilities in finitely strained porous elastomers
The present work is an in-depth study of the connections between microstructural instabilities and their macroscopic manifestations—as captured through the effective properties—in finitely strained porous elastomers. The powerful second-order homogenization (SOH) technique initially developed for random media, is used for the first time here to study the onset of failure in periodic porous elas...
