Conditionals and Probability: A Classical Approach

چکیده
Intuitively, it seems that both sentences are of the form: it’s likely that x, where, in the first case, x = Georgia will join the E.U. and, in the second case, x = if Russia needs foreign aid, Georgia will join the E.U.. Understanding how these sentences get their meaning as a function of the meaning of both the embedding construction, it’s likely that . . . , and the embedded sentence, x, would seem an easy task. The natural way would be to assume i) that in each case the particular sentence x expresses a proposition, and ii) that sentences of the form it’s likely that x are true iff x expresses a proposition that has a probability greater than one-half. In other words, in general, it’s likely that x is true iff p(x) > .5. This simple proposal leaves various questions unanswered. For instance, what does it mean for x to have a probability greater than one-half? Is it that the speaker has a credal state that assigns a subjective probability of more than one-half to x, or is that there is a more objective or intersubjective probability at stake? I will put this question aside, though, as a more basic problem confronts the proposal. ∗I am grateful to Chris Barker, Brett Sherman, and Philippe Schlenker for comments.

The Conditional in Mental Probability Logic
Since Störring’s [63] pioneering experiments on syllogistic reasoning at the beginning of last century, experimental psychology has investigated deductive reasoning in the framework of classical logic. The most prominent examples are the theories of mental models [27] and mental rules [8, 59]. A fragment of the model theory of classical logic is central to mental models. Likewise, a fragment of...
متن کاملTwo meanings of "if"? Individual differences in the interpretation of conditionals.
This work investigates the nature of two distinct response patterns in a probabilistic truth table evaluation task, in which people estimate the probability of a conditional on the basis of frequencies of the truth table cases. The conditional-probability pattern reflects an interpretation of conditionals as expressing a conditional probability. The conjunctive pattern suggests that some people...
متن کاملFormal Epistemology and the New Paradigm Psychology of Reasoning
This position paper advocates combining formal epistemology and the new paradigm psychology of reasoning in the studies of conditionals and reasoning with uncertainty. The new paradigm psychology of reasoning is characterized by the use of probability theory as a rationality framework instead of classical logic, used by more traditional approaches to the psychology of reasoning. This paper pres...
متن کاملConditionals and consequences
We examine the notion of conditionals and the role of conditionals in inductive logics and arguments. We identify three mistakes commonly made in the study of, or motivation for, non-classical logics. A nonmonotonic consequence relation based on evidential probability is formulated. With respect to this acceptance relation some rules of inference of System P are unsound, and we propose refineme...
متن کاملNiki Pfeifer Reasoning about uncertain conditionals
There is a long tradition in formal epistemology and in the psychology of reasoning to investigate indicative conditionals. In psychology, the propositional calculus was taken for granted to be the normative standard of reference. Experimental tasks, evaluation of the participants’ responses and psychological model building, were inspired by the semantics of the material conditional. Recent emp...
متن کاملBiconditionals and “biconditional probability” in reasoning
Conditionals play crucial roles in human reasoning. They represent rules, causal relationship, and explicit inference. Psychology of reasoning, from its inception, has been studying how humans use and understand conditionals. One prominent feature of humans’ conditionals is that it does not follow the pattern of the standard model of conditionals. In classical logic, the corresponding connectiv...
