A Reasoning System Using Inductive Inference of Analogical Union
نویسنده
چکیده
Analogical reasoning derives a new fact based on the analogous facts previously known. Inductive inference is a process of gaining a general rule from examples. We propose a new reasoning system using inductive inference and analogical reasoning, which is applicable to intellectual information processing and we characterize its power. Given an enumeration of paired examples, this system inductively infers a program representing the paring and constructs an analogical union. It reasons by analogy new facts in the limit, i. e., reasons them correctly from some time on, by using a deducibility of them from the analog ical union.

Analogical Inferences in Causal Systems
Analogical and causal reasoning theories both seek to explain patterns of inductive inference. Researchers have claimed that reasoning scenarios incorporating aspects of both analogical comparison and causal thinking necessitate a new model of inductive inference (Holyoak, Lee, & Lu, 2010; Lee & Holyoak, 2008). This paper takes an opposing position, arguing that features of analogical models ma...
متن کاملAbsence Makes the Thought Grow Stronger: Reducing Structural Overlap Can Increase Inductive Strength
Computational models of analogy have assumed that the strength of an inductive inference about the target is based directly on similarity of the analogs, and in particular on shared higher-order relations. However, in Experiment 1 we show that reducing analogical overlap by eliminating a higher-order causal relation (a preventive cause present in the source) from the target increased inductive ...
متن کاملAnalogical Predictive Probabilities
It is well known that Rudolf Carnap’s original system of inductive logic failed to provide an adequate account of analogical reasoning. After this problem was identified there has been no shortage of proposals for how to incorporate analogy into inductive inference. Most alternatives to Carnap’s system, unlike his original one, have not been derived from first principles; this makes it to some ...
متن کاملAnalogy and Relational Reasoning
Analogy is an inductive mechanism based on structured comparisons of mental representations. It is an important special case of role-based relational reasoning, in which inferences are generated on the basis of patterns of relational roles. Analogical reasoning is a complex process involving retrieval of structured knowledge from long-term memory, representing and manipulating role-filler bindi...
متن کاملThe Problem of Analogical Inference in Inductive Logic
We consider one problem that was largely left open by Rudolf Carnap in his work on inductive logic, the problem of analogical inference. After discussing some previous attempts to solve this problem, we propose a new solution that is based on the ideas of Bruno de Finetti on probabilistic symmetries. We explain how our new inductive logic can be developed within the Carnapian paradigm of induct...
