چکیده

ii I would like to dedicate my thesis to my Parents, Professors, Relatives and Friends, every single being who have helped me and encouraged at every stage of my life. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am very grateful to my academic advisor, Dr. Madhavan Raghavan, who gave me an opportunity to be a part of his wonderful team at BioMOST laboratory, University of Iowa. I really appreciate his help, guidance throughout every step of my research without which I would not have been able to do the work that I have. I learnt a lot from him. Appreciate his patience and understanding. It has been an honor working with you. I am thankful to Dr. Punam Saha, who suggested us the approach which we took in the research and that turned out to be a success. I appreciate his valuable inputs in the research. I would like to thank Dr. John Huston, who provided us support with aneurysm traces from Mayo Clinic, Rochester. I am grateful to Dr. Jim Torner without whose support the project would not have even started. I am very thankful to Dr. Xiaodong Wu, who became a part of my research committee at such a short notice. I am also very grateful to my lab mates at BioMOST for their help and support. I am very thankful to all the staff and faculty members of Electrical and Computer Engineering for providing a wonderful support throughout my stay here. I would also like to show my gratitude to Dharmsinh Desai University, through which I was able to explore this opportunity at The University of Iowa under the B.E – M.S joint program. A special thanks to Dr. University for their help and support. Last but not the least; I would like to thank my parents, family members and all my friends for their love and encouragement throughout. iv ABSTRACT Cerebral aneurysm is a local dilation in a blood vessel in brain that can rupture and cause hemorrhagic stroke. A study by International Study of Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysms (ISUIA) has collected a large database of bi-plane cerebral angiograms from patients who were followed longitudinally. This unique data may be mined for testing hypotheses on the role of morphology metrics in rupture risk. A method of reconstructing an approximate 3D geometry of aneurysms from bi-plane angiograms was developed using techniques in curve morphing. Aneurysms from a pilot population of 150 patients …

Monoplane 3D Overlay Roadmap versus Conventional Biplane 2D Roadmap Technique for Neurointervenional Procedures

PURPOSE We investigated whether a 3D overlay roadmap using monoplane fluoroscopy offers advantages over a conventional 2D roadmap using biplane fluoroscopy during endovascular aneurysm treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective chart review was conducted for 131 consecutive cerebral aneurysm embolizations by three neurointerventionalists at a single institution. Allowing for a transitio...

Play dough as an educational tool for visualization of complicated cerebral aneurysm anatomy

BACKGROUND Imagination of the three-dimensional (3D) structure of cerebral vascular lesions using two-dimensional (2D) angiograms is one of the skills that neurosurgical residents should achieve during their training. Although ongoing progress in computer software and digital imaging systems has facilitated viewing and interpretation of cerebral angiograms enormously, these facilities are not a...

3D Reconstruction of Coronary Artery using Biplane Angiography

In this paper, we present a new method for the 3D reconstruction and visualization of coronary arteries in biplane angiography. The proposed method performs direct reconstruction of 3D coronary artery pathways without computing the 2D or 3D vessel centerlines. A front propagation algorithm is used to reconstruct the coronary artery pathways in 3D space. Starting from one or more 3D points, the ...

Detection and characterization of very small cerebral aneurysms by using 2D and 3D helical CT angiography.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Many cases of subarachnoid hemorrhage are due to rupture of small cerebral aneurysms. Our purpose was to evaluate the usefulness of helical CT angiography (CTA) in the detection and characterization of very small (<5 mm) intracranial aneurysms. METHODS One hundred eighty consecutive patients underwent CTA for suspected intracranial aneurysms. All aneurysms prospectively...

Techniques of coiling cerebral aneurysms.

BACKGROUND More than 200 aneurysms have been coiled at the UIC Medical Center within the last 5 years. We describe in detail the technical factors that increase the chance of complete occlusion of a cerebral aneurysm with coils. Aneurysms selected for coiling have good geometry or are in a location that is difficult to reach surgically. Patients with medical conditions that preclude surgical tr...
