چکیده

A series of liquid crystalline mixtures that exhibit remarkably stable 4-layer intermediate phases, with phase ranges of around 30 uC, are reported. The mixtures are formed from a seleniumcontaining antiferroelectric material combined with up to 9% (by weight) of a highly chiral dopant. Various experimental methods including X-ray scattering and electro-optic techniques were employed in order to determine a set of physical parameters for each of the mixtures, such as smectic layer spacing, steric and optical tilt angles and spontaneous polarization. It is shown that the antiferroelectric phase is lost at dopant concentrations between 5 and 6%, when the stability of the 4-layer intermediate phase becomes significantly enhanced. This transition is associated with a decrease in the ratio of the spontaneous to flexoelectric coupling coefficients in the system. The combined observations suggest that molecular conformation is a more significant factor in stabilising the intermediate phases than chirality. The data are compared with existing theories of the intermediate phases and some, but not complete, agreement is observed.

ON THE COEXISTENCE OF SmC* AND SmCA* PHASES IN BINARY CHIRAL-DOPANT ANTIFERROELECTRIC MIXTURES

We present the results from investigations on a series of binary chiraldopant liquid-crystalline mixtures. The racemic host materials possess tilted smectic phases with varying strengths of synclinic and anticlinic ordering (SmC and SmCalt phases respectively). The dopants used were either a strongly synclinic-favouring non liquid-crystalline chiral material (commonly used in FLC chiral-dopant ...

Generation of frustrated liquid crystal phases by mixing an achiral nematic-smectic-C mesogen with an antiferroelectric chiral smectic liquid crystal.

By mixing the achiral liquid crystal HOAB, exhibiting a nematic (N)-smectic-C (SmC) mesophase sequence, with the chiral antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC) (S,S)-M7BBM7, forming the antiferroelectric SmC(a)(*) phase, at least seven different mesophases have been induced which neither component forms on its own: a twist-grain-boundary (TGB(*)) phase, two or three blue phases, the untilted Sm...

Dynamic amplification of light signals in photorefractive ferroelectric liquid crystalline mixtures.

The photorefractive effect in photoconductive ferroelectric liquid crystals that contain photoconductive chiral compounds was investigated. Terthiophene compounds with chiral structures were chosen as the photoconductive chiral compounds, and they were mixed with an achiral smectic C liquid crystal. The mixtures exhibit the ferroelectric chiral smectic C phase. The photorefractivity of the mixt...

The Phase Transitions from Chiral Nematic toward Smectic Liquid Crystals

A Chen-Lubensky energy is used to investigate phase transitions from chiral nematic to smectic C* and smectic A* liquid crystal phases. We consider a liquid crystalline material Ω confined between two parallel plates, where the dimensions of Ω are assumed to be large relative both to the width of a smectic layer and the material’s chiral pitch. We take boundary conditions so that the smectic ph...

Induced Smectic Phases II. Influence of the Amino Substituent on the Induction of Smectic Phases *

The diagrams of state have been studied for some liquid crystal mixtures which show the induction of smectic phases. Each of the systems studied contains one component with an amino group which influences the polarity and the electron donor property of the molecules. The discussion of the diagrams of state, of the thickness of the smectic layers and of the colours of the mixtures, which indicat...
