چکیده

We consider the problem of providing QoS guarantees to Grid users through advance reservation of resources. Advance reservation mechanisms provide the ability to allocate resources to users based on agreed-upon QoS requirements and increase the predictability of a Grid system, yet incorporating such mechanisms into current Grid environments has proven to be a challenging task due to the resulting resource fragmentation. We use concepts from computational geometry to present a framework for tackling the resource fragmentation, and for formulating a suite of scheduling strategies. We also develop efficient implementations of the scheduling algorithms that scale to large Grids. We conduct a comprehensive performance evaluation study using simulation, and we present numerical results to demonstrate that our strategies perform well across several metrics that reflect both userand systemspecific goals. Our main contribution is a timely, practical, and efficient solution to the problem of scheduling resources in emerging on-demand computing environments. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Online Algorithms for Single Machine Schedulers to Support Advance Reservations from Grid Jobs

Advance Reservations(AR) make it possible to guarantee the QoS of Grid applications by reserving a particular resource capability over a defined time interval on local resources. However, advance reservations will also cause the processing time horizon discontinuous and therefore reduce the utilization of local resources and lengthen the makespan (i.e., maximum completion time) of nonresumable ...

Cost estimation of advance reservations over queued jobs: a quantitative study

A grid is a geographically distributed resource sharing environment across multiple organizations. The most typical grid resources are clusters with the high performance/cost ratio. In general, these clusters are shared as non-dedicated grid resources since local users may run their jobs simultaneously. Local jobs are usually queued and processed in a batch mode with uncertain waiting time whil...

A Grid Resource Broker Supporting Advance Reservations and Benchmark-Based Resource Selection

This contribution presents algorithms, methods, and software for a Grid resource manager, responsible for resource brokering and scheduling in early production Grids. The broker selects computing resources based on actual job requirements and a number of criteria identifying the available resources, with the aim to minimize the total time to delivery for the individual application. The total ti...

Resource sharing in advance reservation agents

We present an architecture where clients can make end-to-end resource reservations through agents. For each domain in the network, there is an agent responsible for immediate and advance admission control. Reservations from di erent sources to the same destination domain are aggregated as their paths merge toward the destination. We show that network resources can be shared between immediate an...

Grid resource brokering algorithms enabling advance reservations and resource selection based on performance predictions

We present algorithms, methods, and software for a Grid resource manager, that performs resource brokering and job scheduling in production Grids. This decentralized broker selects computational resources based on actual job requirements, job characteristics, and information provided by the resources, with the aim to minimize the total time to delivery for the individual application. The total ...
