چکیده

The low density model produced by Tomlinson to describe the evolution of hermaphroditism is shown to undervalue the level of gain to hermaphrodites in small populations. This model is revised to take into account gains for hermaphrodites in breeding units where not only one but where both sexes of gonochorists occur. This revision permits hermaphrodites significant gains in populations as large as 50 individuals. Simulation results are used to evaluate the revised model of hermaphroditism.

Phylogenetic perspectives on the evolution of functional hermaphroditism in teleost fishes.

Hermaphroditism is taxonomically widespread among teleost fishes and takes on many forms including simultaneous, protogynous, and protandrous hermaphroditism, bidirectional sex change, and androdioecy. The proximate mechanisms that influence the timing, incidence, and forms of hermaphroditism in fishes are supported by numerous theoretical and empirical studies on their mating systems and sexua...

Direct reciprocity stabilizes simultaneous hermaphroditism at high mating rates: A model of sex allocation with egg trading.

Simultaneous hermaphroditism is predicted to be unstable at high mating rates given an associated increase in sperm competition. The existence of reciprocal egg trading, which requires both hermaphroditism and high mating rates to evolve, is consequently hard to explain. We show using mathematical models that the presence of a trading economy creates an additional fitness benefit to egg product...

Local gamete competition explains sex allocation and fertilization strategies in the sea.

Within and across taxa, there is much variation in the mode of fertilization, that is, whether eggs and/or sperm are released or kept inside or on the surface of the parent's body. Although the evolutionary consequences of fertilization mode are far-reaching, transitions in the fertilization mode itself have largely escaped theoretical attention. Here we develop the first evolutionary model of ...

Sexual selection: lessons from hermaphrodite mating systems.

Over the last 130 years, research has established that (a) sexual selection exists and is widespread in the plant and animal kingdoms; (b) it does not necessarily entail sexual dimorphism; even hermaphrodites have it; (c) it does not require intelligence or a sophisticated sense of esthetics; even tapeworms and plants choose mates; and (d) it does not require brawn or even mobility for competit...

Genetic, abiotic and social influences on sex differentiation in cichlid fishes and the evolution of sequential hermaphroditism

References 107 Abstract Genetic and environmental factors may interact to control sex determination in fishes. A common pattern of initial female differentiation and subsequentmale transformation before maturation in non-hermaphroditic fishes and after maturation in sequentially hermaphroditic fishes has suggested that changes in developmental timing may be responsible for the evolution of vari...
