چکیده

Qualitative spatial and temporal reasoning is based on socalled qualitative calculi. Algebraic properties of these calculi have several implications on reasoning algorithms. But what exactly is a qualitative calculus? And to which extent do the qualitative calculi proposed meet these demands? The literature provides various answers to the first question but only few facts about the second. In this paper we identify the minimal requirements to binary spatio-temporal calculi and we discuss the relevance of the according axioms for representation and reasoning. We also analyze existing qualitative calculi and provide a classification involving different notions of a relation algebra.

Analyzing Qualitative Spatio-Temporal Calculi using Algebraic Geometry

Qualitative spatial reasoning is based on calculi which comprise relations and operation tables that encode operations like relation composition. Designing a calculus involves determining these tables and analyzing reasoning properties—a demanding task that is susceptible to errors if performed manually. This paper is concerned with automating computation of operation tables and analysis of qua...

A Four-Dimensionalist Mereotopology

We develop a formal ontology within the four dimensionalist (4D) paradigm by showing how the algebraic description of spatial mereotopology – a Boolean algebra equipped with a connection relation – can be enriched to provide a mereotopology in which the entities are spatio-temporal, rather than spatial, regions. With the 4D approach it is natural to identify a period of time with all of space d...

Qualitative Spatio-Temporal Reasoning with RCC-8 and Allen's Interval Calculus: Computational Complexity

There exist a number of qualitative constraint calculi that are used to represent and reason about temporal or spatial configurations. However, there are only very few approaches aiming to create a spatio-temporal constraint calculus. Similar to Bennett et al., we start with the spatial calculus RCC-8 and Allen’s interval calculus in order to construct a qualitative spatio-temporal calculus. As...

Spatial Webs: Position Paper

Fundamental to any Spatial Information System, including a Spatial Web, is a characterisation of spatial entities and the relationships between them. This is an area I have worked in since the late 1980s, concentrating in particular on Qualitative Spatial and Spatio-temporal reasoning, particularly mereotopological relations over regions [5], but also on orientation [12]. The Leeds work on mere...
