Characterization of Defects in Lumber Using Color, Shape, and Density Information
نویسندگان
چکیده
To help guide the development of multi-sensor machine vision systems for defect detection in lumber, a fundamental understanding of wood defects is needed. The purpose of this research was to advance the basic understanding of defects in lumber by describing them in terms of parameters that can be derived from color and x-ray scanning technologies and to demonstrate how these parameters can be used to differentiate defects in lumber. Color and x-ray images of intergrown knots, bark pockets, stain/ mineral streak, and clearwood were collected for red oak (Quercus rubra), Eastern white pine, (Pinus strobus), and sugar maple, (Acer saccharum) Parameters were measured for each defect class from the images and class differences were tested using analysis of variance techniques (ANOVA) and Tukey’s pair-wise comparisons with = 0.05. Discriminant classifiers were then developed to demonstrate that an in-depth knowledge of how defect parameters relate between defect types could be used to develop the best possible classification methods. Classifiers developed using the knowledge of defect parameter relationships were found to provide higher classification accuracies for all defects and species than those which used all parameters and where variable selection procedures had been used.

Prevention of Sapwood Discoloration in Hardwood Lumber
By EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Hardwood lumber drying in the South is subject to hot and humid weather that promotes enzymatic stain in sapwood. Research has long studied the problem and certain remedies have been proposed. Chemical dipping is the most commonly used method of preventing enzymatic stain. However, its application is only topical and does not prevent stain. A private operator, Danny Elder o...
متن کاملA System for Optimal Edging and Trimming of Rough Hardwood Lumber
Despite the importance of improving lumber processing early in manufacturing, scanning of unplaned, green hardwood lumber has received relatively little attention in the research community. This has been due in part to the difficulty of clearly imaging fresh-cut boards whose fibrous surfaces mask many wood features. This paper describes a prototype system that scans rough, green lumber and auto...
متن کاملValue of defect information in automated hardwood edger and trimmer systems
Due to the limited capability of board defect scanners, not all defect information required to make the best edging and trimming decision can be scanned for use in an automated system. The objective of the study presented in this paper was to evaluate the lumber value obtainable from edging and trimming optimization using varying levels of defect information as input. In an earlier study (5), a...

متن کاملDevelopment of a 3d Log Sawing Optimization System for Small Sawmills in Central Appalachia, Us
A 3D log sawing optimization system was developed to perform log generation, opening face determination, sawing simulation, and lumber grading using 3Dmodeling techniques. Heuristic and dynamic programming algorithms were used to determine opening face and grade sawing optimization. Positions and shapes of internal log defects were predicted using a model developed by the USDA Forest Service. L...
