ASL: Architectures for Speech and Language Processing
نویسنده
چکیده
Further advances in speech recognition heavily depend on the design of architectures which are ex-ible enough to accomodate very diierent requirements for the ow of data and hypotheses. These requirements result from the peculiarities of the speech understanding process, which is a complex decision procedure covering a number of diierent levels of language description. The paper identiies some reasons for assuming additional communicative needs within the recognition system and points out two areas of ongoing research: the design of prototype speech processing modules, which basically rely on inter-module interaction and the development of software-tools for the creation and modiication of diierent architectural layouts.

Flexible Semantics Communication in Integrated Speech / Language Architectures
We consider communication between modules in an integrated architecture for Speech and Natural Language (NL), in particular the communication with the semantics module. In an integrated Speech/Language system several components—phonology (intonation), syntax, context model—may express meaning constraints, which the semantics module must flexibly manage and evaluate, in order to enable semantic ...
متن کاملLearning Fault-Tolerant Speech Parsing with SCREEN
This paper describes a new approach and a system SCREEN’ for fault-tolerant speech parsing. Speech parsing describes the syntactic and semantic analysis of spontaneous spoken language. The general approach is based on incremental immediate flat analysis, learning of syntactic and semantic speech parsing, parallel integration of current hypotheses, and the consideration of various forms of speec...
متن کاملBimodal bilingualism as multisensory training?: Evidence for improved audiovisual speech perception after sign language exposure.
The aim of the present study was to characterize effects of learning a sign language on the processing of a spoken language. Specifically, audiovisual phoneme comprehension was assessed before and after 13 weeks of sign language exposure. L2 ASL learners performed this task in the fMRI scanner. Results indicated that L2 American Sign Language (ASL) learners' behavioral classification of the spe...
متن کاملTeaching approaches to Computer Assisted Language Learning
Computers have been used for language teaching ever since the 1960's.Learning a second language is a challenging endeavor, and, for decades now, proponents of computer assisted language learning (CALL) have declared that help is on the horison. We investigate the suitability of deploying speech technology in computer based systems that can be used to teach foreign language skills. In this case,...
متن کاملFirst-language acquisition after childhood differs from second-language acquisition: the case of American Sign Language.
This study determined whether the long-range outcome of first-language acquisition, when the learning begins after early childhood, is similar to that of second-language acquisition. Subjects were 36 deaf adults who had contrasting histories of spoken and sign language acquisition. Twenty-seven subjects were born deaf and began to acquire American Sign Language (ASL) as a first language at ages...
