چکیده

WOH G64 is an unusual red supergiant (RSG) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), with a number of properties that set it apart from the rest of the LMC RSG population, including a thick circumstellar dust torus, an unusually late spectral type, maser activity, and nebular emission lines. Its reported physical properties are also extreme, including the largest radius for any star known and an effective temperature that is much cooler than other RSGs in the LMC, both of which are at variance with stellar evolutionary theory. We fit moderate-resolution optical spectrophotometry of WOH G64 with the MARCS stellar atmosphere This paper is based on data gathered with the 6.5 m Magellan telescopes located at Las Campanas, Chile. The Physical Properties of Red Supergiants

Red supergiants (RSGs) are a He-burning phase in the evolution of moderately massive stars (10-25M⊙). For many years, the assumed physical properties of these stars placed them at odds with the predictions of evolutionary theory. We have recently determined new effective temperatures and luminosities for the RSG populations of galaxies with a factor of ∼8 range in metallicity, including the Mil...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

Discovery of a Young Massive Stellar Cluster near Hess J1813-178

We present the serendipitous discovery of a young stellar cluster in the Galactic disk at l=12. Using Keck/NIRSPEC, we obtained high– and low–resolution spectroscopy of several stars in the cluster, and we identified one red supergiant and two blue supergiants. The radial velocity of the red supergiant provides a kinematic cluster distance of 4.7±0.4 kpc, implying luminosities of the stars cons...

Detection of a red supergiant progenitor star of a type II-plateau supernova.

We present the discovery of a red supergiant star that exploded as supernova 2003gd in the nearby spiral galaxy M74. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the Gemini Telescope imaged this galaxy 6 to 9 months before the supernova explosion, and subsequent HST images confirm the positional coincidence of the supernova with a single resolved star that is a red supergiant of 8(+4)(-2) solar masses....
