چکیده

A large health survey was combined with a simulation study to contrast the reduction in bias achieved by double sampling versus two weighting methods based on propensity scores. The survey used a census of one New York county and double sampling in six others. Propensity scores were modeled as a logistic function of demographic variables and were used in conjunction with a random uniform variate to simulate response in the census. These data were used to estimate the prevalence of chronic disease in a population whose parameters were defined as values from the census. Significant (p < 0.0001) predictors in the logistic function included multiple (vs. single) occupancy (odds ratio (OR) 1⁄4 1.3), bank card ownership (OR 1⁄4 2.1), gender (OR 1⁄4 1.5), home ownership (OR 1⁄4 1.3), head of household’s age (OR1⁄4 1.4), and income>$18,000 (OR1⁄4 0.8). The model likelihood ratio chi-square was significant (p < 0.0001), with the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve 1⁄4 0.59. Doublesampling estimates were marginally closer to population values than those from either weighting method. However, the variance was also greater (p < 0.01). The reduction in bias for point estimation from double sampling may be more than offset by the increased variance associated with this method.

Responders versus nonresponders in a dementia study of the oldest old: the 90+ study.

Because of difficulties in finding, recruiting, and diagnosing dementia in the oldest old (ages ≥90 years), most incidence studies include few very elderly persons, and little is known about the characteristics of those who refuse participation. In a California longitudinal study of dementia and aging (The 90+ Study, 2003-2011), we compared nonresponders with responders with regard to informati...

Practice of Epidemiology Estimating Nonresponse Bias in a Telephone-based Health Surveillance Survey in New York City

Despite concerns about nonresponse bias due to decreasing response rates, telephone surveys remain a viable option for conducting local population-based surveillance. However, this becomes problematic for urban populations, which typically have higher nonresponse rates. Unfortunately, traditional methods of evaluating nonresponse bias pose challenges for public health practitioners due to high ...

Intimate partner violence prevalence estimation using telephone surveys: understanding the effect of nonresponse bias.

To assess the effect of nonresponse bias in telephone prevalence studies of intimate partner violence, the authors asked women visiting a health center in Albany, New York, during 1998 about their willingness to participate in telephone surveys. Women physically victimized by a male partner were more likely than other women to say they would participate in telephone surveys (66.7% vs. 44.4%, p ...

No evidence of response bias in a population-based childhood cancer survivor questionnaire survey — Results from the Swiss Childhood Cancer Survivor Study

PURPOSE This is the first study to quantify potential nonresponse bias in a childhood cancer survivor questionnaire survey. We describe early and late responders and nonresponders, and estimate nonresponse bias in a nationwide questionnaire survey of survivors. METHODS In the Swiss Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, we compared characteristics of early responders (who answered an initial questi...
