Finite-Element Methods for Active Contour Models and Balloons for 2-D and 3-D Images

چکیده
AbsfrucfThe use of energy-minimizing curves, known as “snakes” to extract features of interest in images has been introduced by Kass, Witkin and Tenopoulos [W]. A balloon model was introduced in [12] as a way to generalize and solve some of the problems encountered with the original method. A 3-D generalization of the balloon model as a 3-D deformable surface, which evolves in 3-D images, is presented. It is deformed under the action of internal and external forces attracting the surface toward detected edgels by means of an attraction potential. We also show properties of energy-minimizing surfaces concerning their relationship with 3-D edge points. To solve the minimization problem for a surface, two simplified approaches are shown first, defining a 3-D surface as a series of 2-D planar curves. Then, after comparing finite-element method and finite-difference method in the 2-D problem, we solve the 3-D model using the finite-element method yielding greater stability and faster convergence. This model is applied for segmenting magnetic resonance images.

In vivo finite element model-based image analysis of pacemaker lead mechanics
BACKGROUND Fractures of implanted pacemaker leads are currently identified by inspecting radiographic images without making full use of a priori known material and structural information. Moreover, lead designers are unable to incorporate clinical image data into analyses of lead mechanics. METHODS A novel finite element/active contour method was developed to quantify the in vivo mechanics of...

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of proximal contour of class II composite restorations placed with straight or contoured matrix band using composite resins with different modulus of elasticity on stress distribution by finite element method. Methods: In order to evaluate the stress distribution of class II composite restorations using finite element method, upper ...
متن کاملParabolic and hermite cubic finite elements: a flexible technique for deformable models
Uejormable models of elastic structures have been proposed for use in image analysis. The models are based on a minimum energy principle which incorporates both image information and "high level" knowledge of the structures involved. This paper reports a further development of the Finite Element Method (FEM) for use in active contour models. It is shown that parabolic and cubic Finite Elements ...
متن کاملOptimization of the strain distribution in the roll forming process using the desirability function and finite element methods
Defects of the roll forming process are affected by amount and situation of the strains distribution. The effect of the process parameters on the strain distribution in the round cross section roll forming process has been studied. Finite element and response surface method have been used for process modelling. Then desirability functions approach and overlaid counter plots have been employed f...
متن کاملEfficiency of Anti-Hourglassing Approaches in Finite Element Method (TECHNICAL NOTE)
one of the simplest numerical integration method which provides a large saving in computational efforts, is the well known one-point Gauss quadrature which is widely used for 4 nodes quadrilateral elements. On the other hand, the biggest disadvantage to one-point integration is the need to control the zero energy modes, called hourglassing modes, which arise. The efficiency of four different an...
