چکیده

An emerging class of database applications is characterized by frequent updates of low-dimensional data, e.g. coming from sensors that sample continuous real world phenomena. Traditional persistency requirements can be weakened in this setting of frequent updates, emphasizing a role of the main-memory in external storage index structures and enabling a higher update throughput. Moreover, in order for an index to be suitable for practical applications, efficient past-state queries should be supported without significantly penalizing other operations. These issues are not adequately addressed in the database research. We report on the R-tree—our first step towards resolving them. Based on this, we outline a number of concrete short-term and more abstract longer-term future research directions.

Main-Memory Operation Buffering for Efficient R-Tree Update

Emerging communication and sensor technologies enable new applications of database technology that require database systems to efficiently support very high rates of spatial-index updates. Previous works in this area require the availability of large amounts of main memory, do not exploit all the main memory that is indeed available, or do not support some of the standard index operations. Assu...

The DCB-Tree: A Space-Efficient Delta Coded Cache Conscious B-Tree

Main-memory index structures have become mainstream for a large number of problem domains. However, in the case of web-based datasets, which feature exponential growth, it is an ongoing challenge to fit those data entirely in main-memory. In this paper, we present the DCB-Tree, an extremely space efficient main-memory index structure for the storage of short fixed-size keys. It features a two-s...

A Study of Index Structures for Main Memory Database Management Systems

One approach to achieving high performance in a database management system is to store the database in main memorv rather than on disk. -One can then design new data structures aid algorithms oriented towards making eflicient use of CPU cycles and memory space rather than minimizing disk accesses and &ing disk space efliciently. In this paper we present some results on index structures from an ...

SeTPR*-tree: Efficient Buffering for Spatiotemporal Indexes Via Shared Execution

In this paper, we study the problem of efficient spatiotemporal indexing of moving objects. In order to reduce the frequency of object location updates, a linear motion model is used to model the near future location of moving objects. A number of existing spatiotemporal indexes have already been proposed for indexing these models. However, these indexes are either designed to offer high query ...

Towards Optimal Utilization of Main Memory for Moving Object Indexing

In moving object databases, existing disk-based indexes are unable to keep up with the high update rate while providing speedy retrieval at the same time. However, efficient management of moving-object database can be achieved through aggressive use of main memory. In this paper, we propose an Integrated Memory Partitioning and Activity Conscious Twin-index (IMPACT) framework where the moving o...
