A Hierarchical Model for Morphological Galaxy Classification
نویسندگان
چکیده
We propose a new method for the morphological galaxy classification which incorporates two main contributions: (i) the generation of artificial images of galaxies through geometric transformations to be used as additional examples in the training phase, (ii) the use of a novel hierarchical classifier for hierarchical galaxy classification. An additional classifier distinguishes galaxies from stars based on geometrical moments. The proposed method was tested with two different astronomical databases. The results found show that the hierarchical classification method has a higher performance than flat classification, and that the use of artificial examples and oversampling provide a significant improvement in performance.

Morphological classification of high redshift galaxies
We present GASPHOT, a tool for automated surface photometry and morphological classification of galaxies in deep and wide fields. The requirements for any such tool are reviewed, and its use for the classification of high-z galaxies is presented. In the case if HDF-like images, for galaxies having a magnitude ranging from 24 to 27.5, the uncertainties on the photometric parameters derived from ...
متن کاملFaint galaxy counts as a function of morphological type in a hierarchical merger model
The unprecedented resolution of the refurbished Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has led to major advances in our understanding of galaxy formation. The high image quality in the Medium Deep Survey and Hubble Deep Field has made it possible, for the first time, to classify faint distant galaxies according to morphological type. These observations hav...

The Rest - Frame Fuv Morphologies of Star - Forming Galaxies at Z ∼ 1 . 5 and Z ∼ 4
We apply a new approach to quantifying galaxy morphology and identifying galaxy mergers to the rest-frame far-ultraviolet images of 82 z ∼ 4 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) and 55 1.2 < z < 1.8 emission-line galaxies in the GOODS and Ultra Deep Fields. We compare the distributions of the Gini coefficient (G), second-order moment of the brightest 20% of galaxy light (M20), and concentration (C) for ...
متن کاملDevelopment of an Automatic Land Use Extraction System in Urban Areas using VHR Aerial Imagery and GIS Vector Data
Lack of detailed land use (LU) information and efficient data collection methods have made the modeling of urban systems difficult. This study aims to develop a novel hierarchical rule-based LU extraction framework using geographic vector and remotely sensed (RS) data, in order to extract detailed subzonal LU information, residential LU in this study. The LU extraction system is developed to ex...
