چکیده

We study the constraint satisfaction problem over the point algebra. In this problem, an instance consists of a set of variables and a set of binary constraints of forms (x < y), (x ≤ y), (x 6= y) or (x = y). Then, the objective is to assign integers to variables so as to satisfy as many constraints as possible. This problem contains many important problems such as Correlation Clustering, Maximum Acyclic Subgraph, and Feedback Arc Set. We first give an exact algorithm that runs in O∗(3 log 5 log 6) time, which improves the previous best O∗(3n) obtained by a standard dynamic programming. Our algorithm combines the dynamic programming with the split-and-list technique. The split-and-list technique involves matrix products and we make use of sparsity of matrices to speed up the computation. As for approximation, we give a 0.4586-approximation algorithm when the objective is maximizing the number of satisfied constraints, and give an O(logn log logn)-approximation algorithm when the objective is minimizing the number of unsatisfied constraints. 1998 ACM Subject Classification G.2.2 Graph Theory

Exact and approximate reasoning about temporal relations

Allen gives an algebra for representing qualitative temporal information about the relationships between pairs of intervals. In this paper, we address a fundamental reasoning task that arises in applications of the algebra: Given (possibly indefinite) knowledge about the relationships between intervals, find all feasible relationships between two intervals. We call this the minimal labels probl...

Efficient Approximation Algorithms for Point-set Diameter in Higher Dimensions

We study the problem of computing the diameter of a  set of $n$ points in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space for a fixed dimension $d$, and propose a new $(1+varepsilon)$-approximation algorithm with $O(n+ 1/varepsilon^{d-1})$ time and $O(n)$ space, where $0 < varepsilonleqslant 1$. We also show that the proposed algorithm can be modified to a $(1+O(varepsilon))$-approximation algorithm with $O(n+...

Approximation Methods for Solving the Equitable Location Problem with Probabilistic Customer Behavior

Location-allocation of facilities in service systems is an essential factor of their performance. One of the considerable situations which less addressed in the relevant literature is to balance service among customers in addition to minimize location-allocation costs. This is an important issue, especially in the public sector. Reviewing the recent researches in this field shows that most of t...

New Directions in Approximation Algorithms and Hardness of Approximation

Combinatorial optimization encompasses a wide range of important computational tasks such as UNIFORMSPARSESTCUT (also known as NORMALIZEDCUT), MAXCUT, TRAVELINGSALESMANPROBLEM, and VERTEXCOVER. Most combinatorial optimization problems are NP-hard to be solved optimally. On one hand, a natural way to cope with this computational intractability is via designing approximation algorithms to efficie...

Agent-based approach for cooperative scheduling

This paper studies the multi-factory production (MFP) network scheduling problem where a number of different individual factories join together to form a MFP network, in which these factories can operate more economically than operating individually. However, in such network which known as virtual production network with self-interested factories with transportation times, each individual facto...
