چکیده

Correctness problems in the iBGP routing, the de-facto standard to spread global routing information in Autonomous Systems, are a well-known issue. Configurations may route cost-suboptimal, inconsistent, or even behave non-convergent and -deterministic. However, even if a lot of studies have shown many exemplary problematic configurations, the exact scope of the problem is largely unknown: Up to now, it is not clear which problems may appear under which iBGP architectures. The exact scope of the iBGP correctness problem is of high theoretical and practical interest. Knowledge on the resistance of specific architecture schemes against certain anomaly classes and the reasons may help to improve other iBGP schemes. Knowledge on the specific problems of the different schemes helps to identify the right scheme for an AS and develop workarounds. 1998 ACM Subject Classification Computer-Communication Networks: Network Protocols – Protocol verification, Routing protocols

Comprehensive Solution for Anomaly-Free BGP

The Internet consists of many self-administered and inter-connected Autonomous Systems (ASms). ASms exchangeinter-AS routing information with each other via the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). Neighboring BGP routers located in different ASms share their inter-AS routing information via external BGP (eBGP), whereas two routers in the same AS share their inter-AS routing information via internal ...

Preventing persistent oscillations and loops in IBGP configuration with route reflection

Internal Border Gateway Protocol (IBGP) is responsible for distributing external reachability information, obtained via External-BGP (EBGP) sessions, within an autonomous system (AS). To avoid a full mesh of IBGP sessions between all the BGP speakers of an AS, scaling schemes such as route reflection and AS confederations have been proposed. But it has been observed that employing these schemes...

On Constructing Correct and Scalable iBGP

BGP (Border Gateway Protocol), the Internet's current inter-domain routing protocol, has two modes of operation: eBGP (external BGP, used to exchange routing information between autonomous systems (ASes)), and iBGP (internal BGP, used to propagate that information about external destinations to other BGP routers within an AS). Full-mesh iBGP and iBGP with route reflection are the two most commo...

Analysis of the MED Oscillation Problem in BGP

The Multi Exit Discriminator (MED) attribute of the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is widely used to implement “cold potato routing” between autonomous systems. However, the use of MED in practice has led to BGP persistent oscillation. The MED oscillation problem has been described with example configurations and complicated, step-by-step evaluation of dynamic route computations performed at mul...

Designing Optimal iBGP Route-Reflection Topologies

The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is used today by all Autonomous Systems (AS) in the Internet. Inside each AS, iBGP sessions distribute the external routes among the routers. In large ASs, relying on a full-mesh of iBGP sessions between routers is not scalable, so route-reflection is commonly used. The scalability of route-reflection compared to an iBGP full-mesh comes at the cost of opacity i...
