Gravitational radiation from coalescing binary neutron stars.

چکیده
We calculate the gravitational radiation produced by the merger and coalescence of inspiraling binary neutron stars using 3-dimensional numerical simulations. The stars are modeled as polytropes and start out in the pointmass limit at wide separation. The hydrodynamic integration is performed using smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) with Newtonian gravity, and the gravitational radiation is calculated using the quadrupole approximation. We have run several simulations, varying both the neutron star radius and the equation of state. The resulting gravitational wave energy spectra dE/df are rich in information about the hydrodynamics of merger and coalescence. In particular, our results demonstrate that detailed information on both GM/Rc2 and the equation of state can in principle be extracted from the spectrum. Long baseline interferometers to detect gravitational waves such as TAMA300 [1], GEO600 [2], VIRGO [3], LIGO [4] will be in operation by the end of this century or the beginning of the 21st century. One of the most important sources of gravitational waves for such detectors are coalescing binary neutron stars. PSR1913+16 is the first binary neutron stars found by Hulse and Taylor. The existence...
متن کاملCoalescing Binary Neutron Stars
Coalescing compact binaries with neutron star or black hole components provide the most promising sources of gravitational radiation for detection by the LIGO/VIRGO/GEO/TAMA laser interferometers now under construction. This fact has motivated several different theoretical studies of the inspiral and hydrodynamic merging of compact binaries. Analytic analyses of the inspiral waveforms have been...
متن کاملHydrodynamics of Coalescing Binary Neutron Stars: Ellipsoidal Treatment
We employ an approximate treatment of dissipative hydrodynamics in three dimensions to study the coalescence of binary neutron stars driven by the emission of gravitational waves. The stars are modeled as compressible ellipsoids obeying a polytropic equation of state; all internal fluid velocities are assumed to be linear functions of the coordinates. The hydrodynamic equations then reduce to a...
متن کاملGeneral Relativistic Numerical Simulation on Coalescing Binary Neutron Stars and Gauge-Invariant Gravitational Wave Extraction
We are developing 3 dimensional simulation codes for coalescing binary neutron stars. A code using the maximal slicing condition is obtained. To evaluate the gravitational radiation, we implemented a gauge-invariant wave extraction and compared the wave forms with the metric tensors at the wave zone. The energy spectrum of the waves was also evaluated to investigate the possibility that the exc...
متن کاملOrbital Eccentricity Effects on the Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background from Coalescing Binary Neutron Stars
Unresolved coalescing binary neutron stars in the Galaxy and beyond produce a stochastic gravitational wave background within the LISA frequency band, which can be potentially dangerous for possible detection of fundamentally more interesting relic cosmological backgrounds. Here we address the question what effects the unavoidable eccentricity of orbits of these systems should have on the prope...
متن کامل3D General Relativistic Simulations of Coalescing Binary Neutron Stars
We develop a 3 dimensional computer code to study a coalescing neutron star binary. The code can currently follow the evolution up to two stars begin to merge from two spherical stars of mass 1M⊙ and radius 8.9km with separation 35.4km. As for coordinate conditions, we use conformal slicing and pseudo-minimal distortion conditions. The evolution equations for the metric is integrated using the ...
