New VLBI observations of SS 433
نویسنده
چکیده
The unique object SS433 is brieey reviewed with particular reference to the part played by the stellar wind ejected by the early type companion star. The aims of this observational campaign are described and the theory of the mass loss rate measurements explained. VLBA 1.6 GHz maps are presented as well as preliminary 23 GHz VLA and MERLIN maps. Mass loss rates of around 510 ?6 M yr ?1 are found, consistent with earlier results and the properties of Wolf-Rayet stars.

One - sided jet at milliarcsecond scales in LS I + 61 ◦ 303
We present Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations of the high mass X-ray binary LS I +61 • 303, carried out with the European VLBI Network (EVN). Over the 11 hour observing run, performed ∼10 days after a radio outburst, the radio source showed a constant flux density, which allowed sensitive imaging of the emission distribution. The structure in the map shows a clear extension t...
متن کاملInflow and outflow from the accretion disc of the microquasar SS 433: UKIRT spectroscopy
A succession of near-IR spectroscopic observations, taken nightly throughout an entire cycle of SS 433’s orbit, reveal (i) the persistent signature of SS 433’s accretion disc, having a rotation speed of ∼500 km s (ii) the presence of the circumbinary disc recently discovered at optical wavelengths by Blundell, Bowler & Schmidtobreick (2008) and (iii) a much faster outflow than has previously be...
متن کاملSs 433: the Second Wolf-rayet X-ray Binary ?
We present mid-infrared spectrophotometric observations of SS 433 with ISOPHOT. The HeI+HeII lines in both spectra of SS 433 and of the Wolf-Rayet star WR147, a wind-colliding WN8+BO5 binary system, closely match. The 2.5-12 μm continuum radiation is due to an expanding wind free-free emission in an intermediate case between optically thick and optically thin regimes. The inferred mass loss rat...
متن کاملThe inner radio jet region and the complex environment of SS 433
We present multi-frequency VLBA+VLA observations of SS433 at 1.6, 5 and 15 GHz. These observations provide the highest angular resolution radio spectral index maps ever made for this object. Motion of the components of SS433 during the observation is detected. In addition to the usual VLBI jet structure, we detect two radio components in the system at an anomalous position angle. These newly di...
متن کاملThe Distance to SS 433/W50 and its Interaction with the Interstellar Medium
The distance to the relativistic jet source SS 433 and the related supernova remnant W50 is re-examined using new observations of H I in absorption from the VLA, H I in emission from the GBT, and CO emission from the FCRAO. The new measurements show H I in absorption against SS 433 to a velocity of 75 km s but not to the velocity of the tangent point, which bounds the kinematic distance at 5.5 ...
