Likelihood Analysis of Repeating in the Batse Catalogue

چکیده

I describe a new likelihood technique, based on counts-in-cells statistics, that I use to analyze repeating in the BATSE 1B and 2B catalogues. Using the 1B data, I nd that repeating is preferred over nonrepeating by 4.3:1 odds, with a well-de ned peak at 5-6 repetitions per source. I nd that the post-1B data are consistent with the repeating model inferred from the 1B data, after taking into account the lower fraction of bursts with well-determined positions. Combining the two data sets, I nd that the odds favoring repeating over non-repeating are almost una ected at 4:1, with a narrower peak at 5 repetitions per source. I conclude that the data sets are consistent both with each other and with repeating, and that for these data sets the odds favor repeating.

A Test of Gamma Ray Burst Recurrence in the Batse 3b Data Set

We analyse the BATSE 3B catalog using the pair-matching statistic. This statistic counts only the burst pairs which may have originated from the same source, so it is less likely to yield false detections of \repeating bursts" than the nearest neighbor and correlation function statistics. Even in the ideal case when repeating is the only possible source of burst correlations, the pair matching ...

Is There Evidence for Repeating Gamma Ray Bursters in the Batse Data?

The possibility that classical gamma ray bursts (GRB) occasionally repeat from the same locations on the sky provides a critical test of GRB models. There is currently some controversy about whether there is evidence for burst repetition in the BATSE data. We introduce a gamma ray burst \pair matching" statistic that can be used to search for a repeater signal in the BATSE data. The pair matchi...

Analysis of the Systematic Errors in the Positions of BATSE Catalog Bursts

We analyze the systematic errors in the positions of bursts in the BATSE 1B, 2B and 3B catalogs, using a likelihood approach. We use the BATSE data in conjunction with 196 single IPN arcs. We assume circular Gaussian errors, and that the total error is the sum in quadrature of the systematic error σsys and statistical error σstat, as prescribed by the BATSE catalog. We find that the 3B burst po...

Likelihood Methods and Classical Burster Repetition

We develop a likelihood methodology which can be used to search for evidence of burst repetition in the BATSE catalog, and to study the properties of the repetition signal. We use a simpli ed model of burst repetition in which a number Nr of sources which repeat a xed number of times Nrep are superposed upon a number Nnr of non-repeating sources. The instrument exposure is explicitly taken into...
