Desktop Virtual Environments in Construction Education
نویسنده
چکیده
In construction science, classroom oriented education remains the preferred mode of teaching. Alternative methods such as field trips, use of 3D drawings, and physical models often supplement and enhance the understanding of students. In addition to the risks involved with field trips, designated sites may not be at the particular stage of construction during the academic semester, or the construction sequence may not be fast enough to demonstrate the multiple facets during field visits. Considerable pedagogical advantages can be achieved by the integration of IT and visualization tools in teaching construction engineering/technology. The objective of this research was to develop a desktop virtual environment using 3D, animations, virtual reality and walkthrough of construction processes of steel, concrete, and lightwood structures. These visualization techniques can be valuable aids not only in teaching in the classroom but also an effective self-directed tool for open learning via the web.

1 We examined a model of the impact of a 3D desktop virtual reality environment on the 2 learner characteristics (i.e. perceptual and psychological variables) that can enhance chemistry3 related learning achievements in an introductory college chemistry class. The relationships 4 between the 3D virtual reality features and the chemistry learning test as it relates to the selected 5 perceptual (...
متن کاملUsing Virtual Environments to Visualize Atmospheric Data: Can It Improve a Meteorologist’s Potential to Analyze
Conventional analysis of atmospheric data includes three-dimensional desktop-computer displays. One disadvantage is that it can reduce the ability to zoom in and see small-scale features while concurrently viewing other faraway features. This research intends to determine if using virtual environments to examine atmospheric data can improve a meteorologist's ability to analyze the given informa...
متن کاملVMLab: Infrastructure to Support Desktop Virtualization Experiments for Research and Education
In terms of convenience and cost-savings, user communities have benefited from transitioning to virtual desktop clouds (VDCs) that are accessible via thin-clients, moving away from dedicated hardware and software in “traditional desktops”. Allocating and managing VDC resources in a scalable and cost-effective manner poses unique challenges to cloud service providers. User workload profiles in V...
متن کاملInfluences of Gender and Computer Gaming Experience in Occupational Desktop Virtual Environments: A Cross-Case Analysis Study
This study used a cross-case analysis methodology to compare four line-of-inquiry studies of desktop virtual environments (DVEs) to examine the relationships of gender and computer gaming experience to learning performance and perceptions. Comparison was made of learning patterns in a general non-technical DVE with patterns in technically complex, occupationally-specific DVEs. Two oppositely-ge...
متن کاملImpact of Network Quality Deterioration on User’s Perceived Operability and Live-migration of Virtual Machines in Remote Desktop Environments
The remote desktop environment (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) is attracting interest as a way to strengthen security and support mobile access or telework. To realize the remote desktop environments, a remote desktop protocol is required to transfer information via a network about the user’s operations made on the keyboard and mouse on a terminal to the remote server. The growing popularity o...
