چکیده

Currently, abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs), which are a permanent dilation of the aorta, are treated surgically when the maximum transverse diameter surpasses 5.5cm. AAA rupture occurs when the locally acting wall stress exceeds the locally acting wall strength. There is a need to review the current diameter-based criterion, and so it may be clinically useful to develop an additional tool to aid the surgical decision-making process. A Finite Element Analysis Rupture Index (FEARI) was developed. Ten patient-specific AAAs were reconstructed, and the corresponding wall stress computed. Previous experimental work on determination of ultimate tensile strengths (UTS) from AAA tissue samples was implemented in this study. By combining peak wall stress along with average regional UTS, a new approach to the estimation of patient-specific rupture risk

Biomechanical prediction of abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture risk: Sensitivity analysis

Objectives: The purpose of this research is to determine the quantitative relationship between the peak wall stress of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and its clinical risk factors including its maximum diameter, asymmetry index, wall thickness and abnormal high blood pressure. Methods: The response surface experimental design with one response and four variables was used to design the experime...

In vivo feasibility case study for evaluating abdominal aortic aneurysm tissue properties and rupture potential using acoustic radiation force impulse imaging.

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is defined as a permanent and irreversible localized dilatation of the abdominal aorta. A reliable, non-invasive method to assess the wall mechanics of an aneurysm may provide additional information regarding their susceptibility to rupture. Acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) imaging is a phenomenon associated with the propagation of acoustic waves in att...

Brief Review New Approaches to Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Rupture Risk Assessment Engineering Insights With Clinical Gain

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) rupture remains a significant cause of death in the developed world. Current treatment approaches rely heavily on the size of the aneurysm to decide on the most appropriate time for clinical intervention and treatment. However, in recent years, several alternative rupture risk indicators have been proposed. This brief review examines some of these new approaches ...

Peak wall stress does not necessarily predict the location of rupture in abdominal aortic aneurysms.

UNLABELLED Using finite element analysis, we evaluated if the site of an aortic bleb, known to be prone to rupture, coincides with the location of peak wall stress (PWS) in a patient-specific abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) model. REPORT PWS was not located at the bleb site, even when stress values were estimated for different bleb wall thicknesses (0.5-2.0 mm) while the rest of the AAA wall ...
