چکیده

In a recent issue of Systematic Biology, Briggs (2003: Fishes and Birds: Gondwana Life Rafts Reconsidered, pp. 548–553) examines the current distributions of four vertebrate clades (cichlid fishes, aplocheiloid killifishes, ratites, and parrots), which have been attributed to the Mesozoic fragmentation of Gondwana (Parenti, 1981; Stiassny, 1991; Murphy and Collier, 1997; Farias et al., 1999). Briggs (2003) contests the vicariance hypotheses offered by these authors for cichlids and aplocheiloid killifishes in favor of scenarios reliant on transoceanic marine dispersal. His conclusions are based on the absence of Cretaceous-age fossils for these clades, as well as strict adherence to Myers’ (1938) classification of cichlids and killifishes as secondary freshwater fishes. For fishes, the arguments Briggs uses to explain their current distributions rely on what he perceives to be a valid and absolute distinction: that between so-called primary and secondary freshwater fishes (Myers, 1938) and what this implies regarding their dispersal ability. According to Briggs (2003:549), the current distribution of aplocheiloid killifishes has a simple explanation (our italics):

Global-Scale Relationships between Colonization Ability and Range Size in Marine and Freshwater Fish

Although fish range sizes are expected to be associated with species dispersal ability, several studies failed to find a clear relationship between range size and duration of larval stage as a measure of dispersal potential. We investigated how six characteristics of the adult phase of fishes (maximum body length, growth rate, age at first maturity, life span, trophic level and frequency of occ...

Fishes and the Break-up of Pangaea: an introduction

There is general agreement that a tight relationship exists between evolutionary histories of living lineages and the shifting geography of the Earth during the Phanerozoic, but how to depict that link has been much disputed in recent decades. The issue is fundamental, as it involves two supposedly-irreconcilable paradigms for how we interpret past and present distributions: the Darwin–Wallace ...

Co-invasion of anchor worms Lernaea cyprinacea (Copepoda: Lernaeidae) in some freshwater fishes of the Kor River Basin, Southwest of Iran with some remarks on the ecological aspects of lernaeosis in the country

In the present investigation, co-invasion of Lernaea parasite is reported in some fish species, collected from the Kor River Basin (Dorudzan Reservoir and Kor River), Southwest of Iran in 2010 and 2011.  Lernaea cyprinacea parasites were isolated from the external surface of eye, lips, gills, nostrils, fins, operculum and body of Alburnus mossulensis, Capoeta aculeata, Capoeta saadii (all nativ...

The importance of sound effect assessment in the Iranian freshwater endemic fishes

Endemic fishes are part of the genetic resources in aquatic habitats. The Caspian Sea, as the largest lake in the world, has a unique habitat diversity and is of great importance for the countries of the region. Over the recent decades, with the increase in the level of anthropogenic sound, its effects on freshwater and marine fishes have been considered by fisheries managers and stakeholders. ...
