چکیده

G>TROWTH in any field of science is almost always uneven. The past decade, for example, has been a period of turbulent growth in the field of perception, a period in which parallel inquiries in neurophysiology, physics, and psychology have each in turn thrown light upon the nature of the perceptual process, light of such an order as to dazzle us all a bit with respect to the fundamental nature of perceiving. I should like briefly to review some of these developments before turning to the principal topic of this symposium: the problems of sensory deprivation. Let me consider first the field of physics. The classical metrics of physics up to the end of the 19th century were the centimeters, grams, and seconds of classical mechanics. Until very recently in psychology,

Light deprivation related changes of strategy selection in the radial maze

During the early postnatal age environmental signals underlie development of sensory systems. The visual system is considered as an appropriate system for evaluation of the role of sensory experience in postnatal development of sensory systems. In this study we evaluated the effect of visual deprivation on the usage of visuospatial cues in navigation of radial arm maze. Light (LR) and dark rear...

Unilateral Hearing Loss: Prevalence, Causes, Consequences and Available Remedies

Introduction: The prevalence of unilateral sensory neural hearing loss is 3 to 6 in every 1000 people and this prevalence will be about 3 to 5 percent by including conductive hearing loss. Studies have shown that people with unilateral hearing loss are having problems in speech and language development. Nowadays the available options for treatment and rehabilitation of people with unilateral he...

Neglect as a Violation of Species-Expectant Experience: Neurodevelopmental Consequences.

The human brain requires a wide variety of experiences and environmental inputs in order to develop normally. Children who are neglected by caregivers or raised in institutional environments are deprived of numerous types of species-expectant environmental experiences. In this review, we articulate a model of how the absence of cognitive stimulation and sensory, motor, linguistic, and social ex...

Sensory Development: Brief Visual Deprivation Alters Audiovisual Interactions

Two recent studies have independently demonstrated that short periods of visual deprivation early in human development can have long-term functional consequences on sensory perception and on the balance between auditory and visual attention.
