A Temporal Statistical Model for Entity-Relationship Schemas
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper is about the statistical description of the contents of an existing or future database. This information, very often neglected in database design methods, is essential for database optimisation and physical tuning for instance. The paper defines an extension of the E-R model to specify the size of the populations of entity types, relationship types, domains, attributes, and of their interconnections. It proposes a minimum set of statistics together with the relations that organise them. It analyses the problem of computing these statistics by using the relations as derivation rules. Data statistics are then considered as time-dependent quantities. Finally, the paper proposes translation rules that allows the preservation of the statistics when their supporting schema is restructured. This statistical model has been implemented in a commercial CASE tool.

Recent efforts in the Conceptual Modelling community have been devoted to properly capturing time-varying information. Various temporally enhanced Entity-Relationship (ER) models have been proposed that are intended to model the temporal aspects of database conceptual schemas. متن کاملAn ontology based approach to the integration of entity-relationship schemas
In schema integration, schematic discrepancies occur when data in one database correspond to metadata in another. We explicitly declare the context that is the meta information relating to the source, classification, property etc of entities, relationships or attribute values in entity-relationship (ER) schemas. We present algorithms to resolve schematic discrepancies by transforming metadata i...

متن کاملMapping Temporal ER Diagrams to Relational Schemas
Many database applications manage information that varies over time, and most of the database schemas for these applications were designed using one of the several versions of the Entity-Relationship (ER) model. In the research community as well as in industry, it is common knowledge that temporal aspects of data are pervasive and important to the applications, but are also difficult to capture...
