STEINSLAND, ODD S., STANLEY S. PASSO, AND GABRIEL G. NAHAS. B@hasic effect of hypoxia on adrenal catecholamine content. Am. \ J. Physiol. 2 18(4) : 995-998. 1970.-The adrenal catecholamine content of guinea pigs and rats exposed to 7.5 y0 oxygen in nitrogen for periods of 4, 8, and 12 hr decreased significantly ( -40% after 12 hr). With more prolonged exposure, adrenal catecholamine content increased, reaching control levels between 20 to 38 hr after onset of hypoxia. In another series of experiments, inhibition of catecholamine synthesis was produced by administering amethyl-L-tyrosine. Inhibition of synthesis in animals breathing air resulted in a slow decline in adrenal catecholamine levels ( -9.1 y0 after 12 hr and -24.2 y0 after 28 hr); in rats exposed to hypoxia there was 54 and 71 y0 depletion of the adrenal medullary content after 12 and 28 hr, respectively. The return to essentially normal catecholamine levels after prolonged hypoxic exposure involves, therefore, an increased rate of synthesis; this increased rate of synthesis occurs mainly in the late phase of hypoxia. The delayed increase in synthesis was apparent in animals removed from the hypoxic environment and permitted to recover in room air. The establishment of a rate of synthesis that will restore and maintain catecholamine content at normal levels might be one of the adaptive processes to hypoxia.

Sustained Hypoxic Pulmonary Vasoconstriction in the Isolated Perfused Rat Lung: Effect of α1-adrenergic Receptor Agonist

Background: Alveolar hypoxia induces monophasic pulmonary vasoconstriction in vivo, biphasic vasoconstriction in the isolated pulmonary artery, and controversial responses in the isolated perfused lung. Pulmonary vascular responses to sustained alveolar hypoxia have not been addressed in the isolated perfused rat lung. In this study, we investigated the effect of sustained hypoxic ventilation o...

Fetal adrenal gland alterations in a rat model of adverse intrauterine environment.

By feeding a low-sodium diet to dams over the last third of gestation, we have developed an animal model of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Given that fetal adrenal development and maturation occur during late gestation in rats, the aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of proteins and enzymes involved in steroidogenesis and catecholamine synthesis in adrenal glands from IUGR...

Estrogen reduces aldosterone, upregulates adrenal angiotensin II AT2 receptors and normalizes adrenomedullary Fra-2 in ovariectomized rats.

We studied the effect of ovariectomy and estrogen replacement on expression of adrenal angiotensin II AT1 and AT2 receptors, aldosterone content, catecholamine synthesis, and the transcription factor Fos-related antigen 2 (Fra-2). Ovariectomy increased AT1 receptor expression in the adrenal zona glomerulosa and medulla, and decreased adrenomedullary catecholamine content and Fra-2 expression wh...

Sympatho-adrenal activation by chronic intermittent hypoxia.

Recurrent apnea with chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) is a major clinical problem in adult humans and infants born preterm. Patients with recurrent apnea exhibit heightened sympathetic activity as well as elevated plasma catecholamine levels, and these phenotypes are effectively recapitulated in rodent models of CIH. This article summarizes findings from studies addressing sympathetic activat...
