چکیده

Computed tomography (CT) imaging is the most appropriate diagnostic tool to confirm suspected left colonic diverticulitis. However, the utility of CT imaging goes beyond accurate diagnosis of diverticulitis; the grade of severity on CT imaging may drive treatment planning of patients presenting with acute diverticulitis. The appropriate management of left colon acute diverticulitis remains still debated because of the vast spectrum of clinical presentations and different approaches to treatment proposed. The authors present a new simple classification system based on both CT scan results driving decisions making management of acute diverticulitis that may be universally accepted for day to day practice.

Acute left-sided colonic diverticulitis: clinical expressions, therapeutic insights, and role of computed tomography

The diagnostic approach of patients with suspected acute diverticulitis remains debated. On the one hand, a scoring system with the best predictive value in diagnosing acute diverticulitis has been developed in order to reduce the use of computed tomography (CT) scan, while, on the other hand, patients with a high probability of acute diverticulitis should benefit from CT scan from a clinical v...

Sigmoid diverticulitis: US findings

Acute diverticulitis (AD) results from inflammation of a colonic diverticulum. It is the most common cause of acute left lower-quadrant pain in adults and represents a common reason for acute hospitalization, as it affects over half of the population over 65 years with a prevalence that increases with age. Although 85% of colonic diverticulitis will recover with a nonoperative treatment, some p...

Radiol Bras. 2017 Mar/Abr;50(2):IX–X Diverticular disease of the colon is an extremely common disease in the Western world, with an estimated incidence ranging from 5% in middle-aged individuals (those in the fourth decade of life) to as high as 60% in those over 80 years of age. The condition has been associated with low fiber intake, increased colonic transit time, and increased intraluminal ...
