UV and X-ray Observations of Mass Outflows in AGN

چکیده

More than half of all low-redshift AGN exhibit UV and X-ray absorption by highly ionized gas. The observed UV and X-ray absorption lines are almost always blue-shifted at velocities of hundreds of km/s, indicating that the absorbing gas is outflowing from the active nucleus. In some cases the inferred mass flux rivals the Eddington limit of the central black hole, an indication that these outflows are intimately related to the mass accretion and energy generation mechanism in AGN. The ejected material can also have an affect on the interstellar medium of the host galaxy and the surrounding intergalactic medium. Over the past several years, coordinated UV and X-ray observations of several bright AGN at high spectral resolution using HST, FUSE, Chandra, and XMMNewton have contributed greatly to our understanding of these outflows. I will give an overview of these recent observations, summarize our FUSE survey of low-redshift AGN, and interpret the results in the context of models of winds from accretion disks and thermally driven winds from the obscuring torus.

New Chandra/ HST-STIS results on Seyfert I AGN: Photoionized Outflows

We present soft X-ray results from observations with Chandra (HETGS) of the Seyfert I AGN NGC 4593 and Mrk 509. We discuss the photoionized outflows associated with Seyfert I AGN in terms of their absorption spectral signatures and discuss their kinematics, column density and ionization state. We discuss the link between UV and X-ray absorbers in Mrk 509 (which was simultaneously observed with ...

AGN Outflows: Analysis of the Absorption Troughs

With the advent of Chandra and XMM, X-ray lines spectroscopy of AGN outflows is off to an exciting start. In this paper we illuminate some of the complications involved in extracting the outflow’s physical conditions (ionization equilibrium, total column density, chemical abundances) from such spectroscopic data. To do so we use the example provided by high-quality FUSE and HST observations of ...

The Connection between Ultraviolet and X - ray Outflows in AGN : the case of PDS 456

High-velocity outflows from AGN are a well-known phenomena in terms of the Broad Absorption Lines seen in the UV/optical. More recently, similar, possibly related, outflows have been reported in the X-ray. The most extreme example is seen in the nearby, luminous QSO PDS 456, which displays a massive, high velocity (50000 km s), high-ionization X-ray outflow of 10M⊙ yr . Here we present the UV s...

Scaling Ultraviolet Outflows in Seyferts

X-ray and UV absorbing outflows are frequently seen in AGN and have been cited as a possible feedback mechanism. Whether or not they can provide adequate feedback depends on how massive they are and how much energy they carry, but it depends in a more fundamental way upon whether they escape the potential of the black hole. If the outflows have reached their asymptotic velocity when we observe ...

Anatomy of the AGN in NGC 5548: II. The Spatial, Temporal and Physical Nature of the Outflow from HST/COS Observations

Context. AGN outflows are thought to influence the evolution of their host galaxies and super massive black holes. Our deep multiwavelength campaign on NGC 5548 revealed an unusually strong X-ray obscuration. The resulting dramatic decrease in incident ionizing flux on the outflow, allowed us to construct a comprehensive physical, spatial and temporal picture for the long-studied AGN wind in th...
