چکیده

This paper presents a technique for the segmentation of anatomic structures in medical images using a topologically adaptable snakes model The model is set in the framework of domain subdivi sion using simplicial decomposition This framework allows the model to maintain all of the strengths associated with traditional snakes while overcoming many of their limitations The model can ow into complex shapes even shapes with signi cant protrusions or branches and topo logical changes are easily sensed and handled Multiple instances of the model can be dynamically created can seamlessly split or merge or can simply and quickly detect and avoid collisions Finally the model can be easily and dynamically converted to and from the traditional parametric snakes model representation We apply a D model to segment structures from medical images with complex shapes and topologies such as arte rial trees that cannot easily be segmented with traditional deformable models

Medical image segmentation using topologically adaptable surfaces

E cient and powerful topologically adaptable deformable surfaces can be created by embedding and de ning discrete deformable surface models in terms of an A ne Cell Decomposition (ACD) framework. The ACD framework, combined with a novel and original reparameterization algorithm, creates a simple but elegant mechanism for multiresolution deformable curve, surface, and solid models to \ ow" or \g...

Interactive Medical Image Segmentation with United Snakes

Snakes have become a standard image analysis technique with several variants now in common use. We have developed a software package called “United Snakes”. It unifies the most important snake variants, including finite difference, B-spline, and Hermite polynomial snakes, within the framework of a general finite element formulation with a choice of shape functions. Furthermore, we have incorpor...

T-snakes: Topology adaptive snakes

We present a new class of deformable contours (snakes) and apply them to the segmentation of medical images. Our snakes are defined in terms of an affine cell image decomposition (ACID). The 'snakes in ACID' framework significantly extends conventional snakes, enabling topological flexibility among other features. The resulting topology adaptive snakes, or 'T-snakes', can be used to segment som...

Interactive segmentation of the breast region from digitized mammograms with united snakes

The segmentation of a digital mammogram into breast region and film background is a necessary prerequisite in the computer-assisted diagnosis of mammograms. The segmentation method should be robust enough to handle a wide variety of digital mammograms obtained from different image acquisition systems. In addition, the large size of digitized mammograms requires an efficient image processing sys...

Physical Modeling Techniques in Active Contours for Image Segmentation

Physical modeling method, represented by simulation and visualization of the principles in physics, is introduced in the shape extraction of the active contours. The objectives of adopting this concept are to address the several major difficulties in the application of Active Contours. Primarily, a technique is developed to realize the topological changes of Parametric Active Contours (Snakes)....
