Why Hot Horizontal Branch Stars Can Appear Redder Than Red Giants ⋆

چکیده
In this paper we report on a curious feature in the V , (U − B) color-magnitude diagrams of globular clusters. In our database, we find that a considerable fraction of blue horizontal branch stars, hotter than the instability strip and cooler than the Grundahl et al. (1999) jump (i.e., 6000 ≤ Teff(K)≤ 10000), have (U − B) colors redder than their red giant progenitors. This red incursion is not expected on theoretical grounds, as horizontal branch stars (whose convective regions are less extended than in red giant structures) should not “appear” cooler than a red giant. Analyzing data from different telescopes we show that: 1) the horizontal branch red incursion is strongly dependent on the shape of the adopted U filter and to a lesser extent, on the B filter; 2) the photometry done with U filters which do not encompass the Balmer jump, do not show the blue horizontal branch red incursion; 3) the occurrence of this feature is also due to the peculiar dependence of the U and B magnitudes on stars effective temperature, gravity, and metallicity; 4) theoretical tracks can reproduce the observed horizontal branch morphology, provided that the appropriate (i.e. exactly responding to the filters effectively used in the observations) transmission curve efficiencies are used for deriving color-Teff transformations; 5) the red incursion extent depends on metallicity.

Aluminum Abundances on the Red Giant Branch: Testing Helium Mixing as a Second Parameter
Although globular cluster horizontal-branch (HB) morphology is determined primarily by the cluster metallicity, observations have shown that clusters with similar metallicities sometimes have very different HB's, indicating the existence of a second parameter. Sweigart (1997, 1999) suggested that deep mixing on the red giant branch (RGB) may be a second parameter if He is mixed into the stellar...
متن کاملBlue horizontal branch stars in metal - rich globular clusters . II . 47 Tuc and NGC 362
Atmospheric parameters (Teff , log g), and radial velocities are derived for twelve candidate blue horizontal branch (HB) stars in the globular clusters 47 Tuc and NGC 362, which so far have been known to contain primarily red HB stars. The spectroscopic targets were selected from the catalog of hot stars detected in these clusters at 1600 Å using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT). Spectr...

متن کاملDiscovery of Super-li Rich Red Giants in Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies
Stars destroy lithium (Li) in their normal evolution. The convective envelopes of evolved red giants reach temperatures of millions of K, hot enough for the Li(p, α)He reaction to burn Li efficiently. Only about 1% of first-ascent red giants more luminous than the luminosity function bump in the red giant branch exhibit A(Li) > 1.5. Nonetheless, Li-rich red giants do exist. We present 15 Li-ric...
متن کاملPhotometric Observations of ω Centauri: Multi-Wavelength Observations of Evolved Stars
We present multi-wavelength observations of the northern population of ω Cen from the main-sequence turn-off to high on the red giant branch. We show that the best information about the metallicity and age of the stars can be gained from combining vby, B-I and V-I colors (in the absence of spectroscopy). We confirm our results for the main-sequence turn-off stars: there is at least a 3 Gyr age ...
