Particle Acceleration in Supernova Remnants and the Production of Thermal and Nonthermal Radiation

چکیده
Energetic particle production in supernova remnants (SNRs) through diffusive shock acceleration has long been suggested as a mechanism by which the bulk of cosmic rays with energies less than ∼ 10 eV are formed. If highly efficient, this process can have a significant effect on the X-ray emission from SNRs as well as their dynamical evolution. Here we investigate the expected modification to the thermal X-ray emission from the forward shock region of young SNRs in which efficient particle acceleration is occurring. Using hydrodynamical simulations for a range of ambient density and magnetic field values, we produce spectra for both the thermal and nonthermal emission components of the postshock gas. For a given ambient density and explosion energy, we find that the position of the forward shock at a given age is a strong function of the acceleration efficiency, providing a strong signature of cosmic ray production. Context. Multiwavelength observations of supernova remnants can be explained within the framework of the diffusive shock acceleration theory, which allows effective conversion of the explosion energy into cosmic rays. Although the models of nonlinear shocks describe reasonably well the nonthermal component of emission, certain issues, including the heating of the thermal plasma and the related ...
متن کاملDiscovering Long Wavelength Neutrino Oscillations in the Distorted Neutrino Spectrum of Galactic Supernova Remnants
We investigate the muon neutrino event rate in km neutrino telescopes due to a number of galactic supernova remnants expected on the basis of these objects’ known γ-ray signals. We evaluate the potential of these neutrino signals to exhibit evidence of the sub-dominant neutrino oscillations expected in various neutrino mixing schemes including pseudo-Dirac scenarios and the Exact Parity Model. ...
متن کاملChandra Studies of Nonthermal Emission from Supernova Remnants and Pulsar Wind Nebulae
While supernova remnants (SNRs) have long been considered prime candidates as sources of cosmic rays, it is only recently that X-ray observations have identified several shell-type SNRs dominated by nonthermal emission, thus revealing shock-accelerated electrons with energies extending far beyond the typical thermal spectrum. Two of these SNRs have been detected as sources of VHE γ-rays. In oth...
متن کاملTheory of non-thermal phenomena in thin plasma sources: galaxy clusters, galaxies and supernova remnants
We review current models of energetic particle acceleration and nonthermal emission from objects of very different scales from clusters of galaxies through massive galaxies to supernova remnants. The nonthermal phenomena in clusters and massive galaxies are considered in the context of the hierarchical model of cosmic structure formation by accretion and merging of the dark matter (DM) substruc...
متن کاملSupernova Remnants and GLAST
It has long been speculated that supernova remnants represent a major source of cosmic rays in the Galaxy. Observations over the past decade have ceremoniously unveiled direct evidence of particle acceleration in SNRs to energies approaching the knee of the cosmic ray spectrum. Nonthermal X-ray emission from shell-type SNRs reveals multi-TeV electrons, and the dynamical properties of several SN...
