We propose a modification of the classical Boussinesq approximation for buoyancy-driven flows of viscous, incompressible fluids in situations where viscous heating cannot be neglected. This modification is motivated by unresolved issues regarding the global solvability of the original system. A very simple model problem leads to a coupled system of two parabolic equations with a source term involving the square of the gradient of one of the unknowns. Based on adequate notions of weak and strong solutions, we establish the global-in-time existence of weak solutions and the uniqueness of strong solutions.

Controllability properties for some semilinear parabolic PDE with a quadratic gradient term

We study several controllability properties for some semilinear parabolic PDE with a quadratic gradient term. For internal distributed controls, it is shown that the system is approximately and null controllable. The proof relies on the Cole-Hopf transformation. The same approach is used to deal with initial controls.

Space-Time Adaptive Wavelet Methods for Optimal Control Problems Constrained by Parabolic Evolution Equations

An adaptive algorithm based on wavelets is proposed for the efficient numerical solution of a control problem governed by a linear parabolic evolution equation. First, the constraints are represented by means of a full weak space-time formulation as a linear system in `2 in wavelet coordinates, following a recent approach by Schwab and Stevenson. Second, a quadratic cost functional involving a ...

Optimal control and model-order reduction of an abstract parabolic system containing a controlled bilinear form : Applied to the example of a controlled advection term in an advection-diffusion equation

In the present paper, a linear parabolic evolution equation is considered whose bilinear form is controlled from a general Banach space. The control-to-state operator and some important properties thereof are presented. For a quadratic objective function, the gradient in the control space is derived. A-posteriori error estimators are presented for a given reduced-order model (ROM) with respect ...
