Simple Procedures for Finding Mean First Passage Times in Markov Chains

چکیده
The derivation of mean first passage times in Markov chains involves the solution of a family of linear equations. By exploring the solution of a related set of equations, using suitable generalized inverses of the Markovian kernel I – P, where P is the transition matrix of a finite irreducible Markov chain, we are able to derive elegant new results for finding the mean first passage times. As a by-product we derive the stationary distribution of the Markov chain without the necessity of any further computational procedures. Standard techniques in the literature, using for example Kemeny and Snell’s fundamental matrix Z, require the initial derivation of the stationary distribution followed by the computation of Z, the inverse I – P + eπ where e = (1, 1, ...,1) and π is the stationary probability vector. The procedures of this paper involve only the derivation of the inverse of a matrix of simple structure, based upon known characteristics of the Markov chain together with simple elementary vectors. No prior computations are required. Various possible families of matrices are explored leading to different related procedures.

Generalized Inverses, Stationary Distributions and Mean First Passage Times with applications to Perturbed Markov Chains
Abstract In an earlier paper (Hunter, 2002) it was shown that mean first passage times play an important role in determining bounds on the relative and absolute differences between the stationary probabilities in perturbed finite irreducible discrete time Markov chains. Further when two perturbations of the transition probabilities in a single row are carried out the differences between the sta...
متن کاملStationary Distributions and Mean First Passage Times of Perturbed Markov Chains
Stationary distributions of perturbed finite irreducible discrete time Markov chains are intimately connected with the behaviour of associated mean first passage times. This interconnection is explored through the use of generalized matrix inverses. Some interesting qualitative results regarding the nature of the relative and absolute changes to the stationary probabilities are obtained togethe...
متن کاملAsymptotic Variance of Passage Time Estimators in Markov Chains
We consider the problem of estimating passage times in stochastic simulations of Markov chains+ Two types of estimator are considered for this purpose: the “simple” and the “overlapping” estimator; they are compared in terms of their asymptotic variance+ The analysis is based on the regenerative structure of the process and it is shown that when estimating the mean passage time, the simple esti...
متن کاملWeak Concentration for First Passage Percolation Times on Graphs and General Increasing Set-valued Processes
A simple lemma bounds s.d.(T )/ET for hitting times T in Markov chains with a certain strong monotonicity property. We show how this lemma may be applied to several increasing set-valued processes. Our main result concerns a model of first passage percolation on a finite graph, where the traversal times of edges are independent Exponentials with arbitrary rates. Consider the percolation time X ...
متن کاملEmpirical Bayes Estimation in Nonstationary Markov chains
Estimation procedures for nonstationary Markov chains appear to be relatively sparse. This work introduces empirical Bayes estimators for the transition probability matrix of a finite nonstationary Markov chain. The data are assumed to be of a panel study type in which each data set consists of a sequence of observations on N>=2 independent and identically dis...
