چکیده

We introduce confidence region techniques for analyzing and visualizing the performance of two-dimensional parametric shape estimators. Assuming an asymptotically normal and efficient estimator for a finite parameterization of the object boundary, Cramér-Rao bounds are used to define a confidence region, centered around the true boundary. Computation of the probability that an entire boundary estimate lies within the confidence region is a challenging problem, because the estimate is a two-dimensional nonstationary random process. We derive lower bounds on this probability using level crossing statistics. The results make it possible to generate confidence regions for arbitrary prescribed probabilities. These global confidence regions conveniently display the uncertainty in various geometric parameters such as shape, size, orientation, and position of the estimated object, and facilitate geometric inferences. Numerical simulations suggest that the new bounds are quite tight.

Cramér-Rao Bounds for Parametric Estimation of Target Boundaries in Nonlinear Inverse Scattering Problems

We present new methods for computing fundamental performance limits for parametric shape estimation in inverse scattering problems, such as passive radar imaging. We evaluate CramérRao lower bounds (CRB) on shape estimation accuracy using the domain derivative technique from nonlinear inverse scattering theory. The CRB provides an unbeatable performance limit for any unbiased estimator, and und...

A regions of confidence based approach to enhance segmentation with shape priors

We propose an improved region based segmentation model with shape priors that uses labels of confidence/interest to exclude the influence of certain regions in the image that may not provide useful information for segmentation. These could be regions in the image which are expected to have weak, missing or corrupt edges or they could be regions in the image which the user is not interested in s...

Simultaneous Confidence Bands for Nonparametric Regression with Repeated Measurements Data

We look into nonparametric regression with repeated measurements collected on a fine grid. An asymptotic normality result is obtained in a function space equipped with the supremum norm. This result can be used to build simultaneous confidence bands (SCB) for various tasks in statistical exploration, estimation and inference. Two applications are proposed: one is a SCB procedure for the regress...
