Inference based method for realignment of single trial neuronal responses

چکیده
Neuronal responses to sensory stimuli or neuronal responses related to behaviour are often extracted by averaging neuronal activity over large number of experimental trials. Such trialaveraging is carried out to reduce noise and to reduce the influence of other signals unrelated to the corresponding stimulus or behaviour. However, if the recorded neuronal responses are jittered in time with respect to the corresponding stimulus or behaviour, averaging over trials may distort the estimation of the underlying neuronal response. Here, we present an algorithm, named dTAV algorithm, for realigning the recorded neuronal activity to an arbitrary internal trigger. Using simulated data, we show that the dTAV algorithm can reduce the jitter of neuronal responses for signal to noise ratios of 0.2 or higher, i.e. in cases where the standard deviation of the noise is up to five times larger than the neuronal response amplitude. By removing the jitter and, therefore, enabling more accurate estimation of neuronal responses, the dTAV algorithm can improve analysis and interpretation of the responses and improve the accuracy of systems relaying on asynchronous detection of events from neuronal recordings.

متن کاملA new method for acquisition and analysis of single unit recording data
Single unit recording has been used as a well-known technique to study the electrical behavior of neurons. In this respect, the classical methods are rather expensive. In this study a simple and inexpensive method for single unit recording studies has been introduced. Computer sound card was used for data acquisition. Neural responses were saved via simple sound applicable packages and then ana...

متن کاملNeuronal response properties of somatosensory cortex (layer IV) are modulated following experience dependent plasticity in c-fiber depleted rats
Previous studies have shown that the receptive field properties, spontaneous activity and spatio-temporal interactions of low-threshold mechanical somatosensory cells in the barrel cortex are influenced by C-fibers. In this study, we examined the effect of C-fiber depletion on response properties of barrel cortex neurons following experience dependent plasticity. Methods: In this study, exte...
متن کاملTrial-by-trial estimation of amplitude and latency variability in neuronal spike trains.
The rate function underlying single-trial spike trains can vary from trial to trial. We propose to estimate the amplitude and latency variability in single-trial neuronal spike trains on a trial-by-trial basis. The firing rate over a trial is modeled by a family of rate profiles with trial-invariant waveform and trial-dependent amplitude scaling factors and latency shifts. Using a Bayesian infe...
