چکیده

INTRODUCTION: To date, spatial encoding for MRI is based on linear X, Y and Z field gradients generated by dedicated X, Y and Z wire patterns. The multi-coil (MC) technique enables the generation of a multitude of magnetic field shapes relevant to biomedical MR [1]. The benefits of the Dynamic Multi-Coil Technique (DYNAMITE) for the magnetic field shimming in rodent [2,3] and human [4] brain have been shown recently as well as proof-of-principle of radial [1,5] and algebraic [6] MRI. Here the potential of DYNAMITE MRI is explored further and the first 3-dimensional multi-slice MRI implementation is presented in which all gradient fields are purely MC-based. The obtained image fidelity is shown to be virtually identical to a conventional MRI system with dedicated X, Y and Z gradient coils. Comparable image quality is a milestone towards the establishment of fully functional and purely MC-based MRI (and shim) systems.

3D MRI gel dosimetry based on image intensity (A new approach)

Background: Since 1984 MRI gel dosimetry has been introduced as a potential technique for 3D dosimetry. Most of the studies have measured R1 (1/T1) or R2 (1/T2) properties of the gel depending on the gel type. We have studied image intensity change in the Fricke gel by different MRI protocols. Materials and Methods: Gel Dosimeters contain 0.4 mM ferrous sulphate, 1 mM NaCl, 50 mM H2SO4 and 1% b...

Magnetic Resonance Multi-view Inverse Imaging (MV InI) for Human Brain

Dynamic MRI usually uses echo-planar imaging (EPI) [1] to achieve high temporal resolution. In brain imaging, modern MRI systems can achieve 3D spatial encoding with the whole-brain coverage using multi-slice EPI with TR of 2 s. A significant amount of time of multi-slice EPI is spent over k-space traversal. Recently, we proposed the MR inverse imaging (InI) [2] to achieve the unprecedented tem...

Improved EPI at 7T with Dynamic Multi-coil Technique (DYNAMITE) Shimming

INTRODUCTION: Echo-planar imaging (EPI) and its variants form the core of many functional and structural imaging studies. Image quality of these scans deteriorates drastically with increasing B0 inhomogeneities. Although post-processing can correct aspects related to image distortion, the only way to prevent signal dropout is by improved shimming. Commonly, higher-order static spherical harmoni...

Non-uniformity of Clinical Head, Head and Neck, and Body Coils in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Introduction Signal intensity uniformity in a magnetic resonance (MR) image indicates how well the MR imaging (MRI) system represents an object. One of the major sources of image non-uniformity in high-field MRI scanners is inhomogeneity of radio-frequency coil. The aim of this study was to investigate non-uniformity in head, head and neck, and body coils and compare the obtained results to det...

Dynamic Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) and Diffusion Weighted MR Imaging (DWI) for Differentiation between Benign and Malignant Salivary Gland Tumors

Background: Salivary gland tumors form nearly 3% of head and neck tumors. Due to their large histological variety and vicinity to facial nerves, pre-operative diagnosis and differentiation of benign and malignant parotid tumors are a major challenge for radiologists. Objective: The majority of these tumors are benign; however, sometimes they tend to transform into a malignant form. Functional M...
