Image Processing Tools for Semi-automatic Minefield Detection

چکیده
Airborne surveys have proved to be a very promising way to detect the boundaries of minefields, a requisite to any mine clearance procedure. Human photo-interpreters are, to date, unchallenged in the analysis of these images. Unfortunately in order to survey all suspected areas of a country and have the resolution needed to detect relevant minefield indicators, a tremendous amount of data is to be collected. This makes the analysis a very time-consuming task. This paper shows how image-processing tools can be used to speed up the work of photo-interpreters by detecting regions of interest or making some repetitive tasks automatic. This leads to a semi-automatic procedure where image processing is used both as a help to the detection of relevant indicators and a way to enhance some given parts of the images. Based on a real campaign performed first in a test site in Belgium and then on a real mine-infested country, namely Mozambique, in the scope of a European project co-ordinated by ITC, the work presented here involves two steps. First, some indicators have been selected for their relevances in minefield detection as well as for their easiness to be automatically detected on the available images. Then detectors devoted to each of these indicators have been implemented. This paper describes some examples of these detectors. Some specifications are also given to ensure the success of such a survey from an image processing point of view. They concern the constraints that minefield indicators and indicator detectors must fulfil in order to be able to be used in such a semi-automatic procedure. Other constraints about the images and the way to collect them to improve the detection of indicators are also given. In addition, some results about compression on minefield images are presented.

Usefulness of semi-automatic tools for airborne minefield detection
Potentialities of airborne minefield detection are nowadays investigated. Such approaches are based on the detection of minefield indicators on mono or multi-sensor airborne images. Most of the indicators will have to be located in vast area using high-resolution imagery. This leads to a tremendous amount of data to be interpreted. Hence semi-automatic detection techniques must be used to pre-f...
متن کاملAutomatic Detection and Localization of Surface Cracks in Continuously Cast Hot Steel Slabs Using Digital Image Analysis Techniques
Quality inspection is an indispensable part of modern industrial manufacturing. Steel as a major industry requires constant surveillance and supervision through its various stages of production. Continuous casting is a critical step in the steel manufacturing process in which molten steel is solidified into a semi-finished product called slab. Once the slab is released from the casting unit, th...
متن کاملAutomatic road crack detection and classification using image processing techniques, machine learning and integrated models in urban areas: A novel image binarization technique
The quality of the road pavement has always been one of the major concerns for governments around the world. Cracks in the asphalt are one of the most common road tensions that generally threaten the safety of roads and highways. In recent years, automated inspection methods such as image and video processing have been considered due to the high cost and error of manual metho...
متن کاملProcessing Digital Image for Measurement of Crack Dimensions in Concrete
The elements of the concrete structure are most frequently affected by cracking. Crack detection is essential to ensure safety and performance during its service life. Cracks do not have a regular shape, in order to achieve the exact dimensions of the crack; the general mathematical formulae are by no means applicable. The authors have proposed a new method which aims to measure the crack dimen...

We investigate the applicability of image analysis to the problem of minefield detection using airborne remote sensing images. We have applied different image processing methods for the detection of minefields, minefield indicators and individual mines. The proposed algorithms involve the extraction of linear features (roads, paths, fences, wires,...), detection of periodic patterns (e.g. regul...
