چکیده

By considering a one-dimensional cross-section through the rough surface, we derive a purely geometrical constraint on the statistical distribution of shadowed facet slopes that should be satissed by any model of surface emissivity that includes the eeect of self-shadowing. Our purpose is not to develop a single shadowing model, but to provide a condition that any valid shadowing model should satisfy. Although the emphasis of the presentation is theoretical, some practical ramiications will also be discussed.

اثرات سایه مشخصه سطوح در پدیده پراکندگی از سطوح ناهموار

In the wave scattering from rough surfaces investigated by using the surface morphology and the vertical AFM, in general the correct and complete results cannot be obtained. If the roughness with respect to the wavelength is more than a critical limit, the theoretical calculation is not the same as the experimental data, and this inequality cannot be corrected without considering the shadowing...

The absorption of light by rough metal surfaces—A three-dimensional ray-tracing analysis

The laser absorptance of rough surfaces has been investigated by using Monte Carlo simulations based on three-dimensional 3D ray tracing. The influence of multiple scattering, shadowing, and the Fresnel-equation based angle dependence is discussed. The 3D results are compared to previously published results from a two-dimensional ray-tracing analysis and the different applications of the two mo...

Visual appearance of matte surfaces.

All visual sensors, biological and artificial, are finite in resolution by necessity. As a result, the effective reflectance of surfaces in a scene varies with magnification. A reflectance model for matte surfaces is described that incorporates the effect of macroscopic surface undulations on image brightness. The model takes into account complex physical phenomena such as masking, shadowing, a...

Backscattering measurements from double-scale randomly rough surfaces.

We present experimental measurements of light backscattered from double-scale randomly rough surfaces (oceanlike surfaces) with different statistical parameters illuminated at small and large angles of incidence. The surfaces are composed of a small-scale roughness superimposed on a slowly (large-scale) varying surface. The large-scale surfaces are diamond-machined periodic surfaces made on alu...

Single bacteriorhodopsin molecules revealed on both surfaces of freeze- dried and heavy metal-decorated purple membranes

The flat sheets of the purple membrane from Halobacterium halobium contain only a single protein (bacteriorhodopsin) arranged in a hexagonal lattice. After freeze-drying at -80 degrees C (a method that is superior to air-drying), shadowing with tantalum/tungsten, and image processing, structural details on both surfaces are portrayed in the range of 2 nm. One surface is rough and lattice lines ...
