Effect of 2,4 dinitrophenol on electrical activity in Purkinje and ventricular muscle fibers of hog heart.

چکیده
• Fn a recent study, it was observed that 2,4. dinitrophenol, in concentrations of 2 to 5 X 10~ M, produced a shortened action potential duration and a decrease in the amplitude of the action potential in the atrial fiber of the isolated mouse heart and in the ventricular fibers of the intact and isolated perfused frog heart. The membrane resting potential was unchanged even during the period of cardiac arrest. Similar findings had been reported in the rat atrium and cat ventricular muscle fiber/' In the study reported here, the investigation was extended to the specialized conductive (Purkinje) fiber in order to make comparative observations of the effects of 2,4 dinitrophenol on the electrical activity of this fiber as compared to its effect on ventricular muscle fiber. A false tendon-ventricular muscle preparation of the hog heart was used because its greater mass compared to a frog heart preparation facilitated visualization and employment of the technical procedures suitable for this study.

EDITORIAL The Vagus and the Ventricles THE ROLE of the vagus nerve in modulating the electrical activity of the mammalian ventricles and the specialized fibers distal to the atrioventricular node remains a puzzle. For many years, interest in the effects of the vagus on cardiac electrical activity focused on changes in trans-membrane potentials of fibers in the sinoatrial and atrio-ventricular n...
متن کاملEffects of intracoronary potassium chloride on electrograms of canine Purkinje fibers in six-hour- to four-week-old myocardial infarcts. An indication of time-dependent changes in collateral blood flow.
Canine hearts were isolated 6 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, 6 days, and 4 weeks after coronary artery ligation and were perfused with blood from support dogs. Electrograms were recorded from Purkinje fibers in the infarcted zone and from Purkinje fibers and ventricular muscle in noninfarcted areas. Administration of 2.5 mEq of KC1 into the coronary circulation of the infarcted hearts abolished nonin...
متن کاملDistinct patterns of connexin expression in canine Purkinje fibers and ventricular muscle.
Electrical conduction is more rapid in Purkinje fibers than in ventricular muscle, which are distinct cardiac tissues that have different active and passive electrophysiological properties. We have recently demonstrated that canine myocardium contains multiple gap junction proteins or connexins that form channels with unique electrophysiological properties. To determine whether differences in c...
