چکیده

A new methodology for determining simultaneous chemical and phase equilibrium of mixtures of light gases and aqueous electrolyte solutions with the potential for multiple salt deposition is proposed. The novel aspects of this new approach include, but are not limited to (1) a novel tearing algorithm for determining equilibrium ion solubility limits, (2) rigorous proof that the proposed tearing algorithm generates a Cauchy sequence and is therefore guaranteed to converge to the correct equilibrium ion solubility limits (3) and a unique formulation of the combined chemical and multi-phase equilibrium flash problem that accounts for salt deposition but decouples the chemical and phase equilibrium aspects of the flash. Examples from real EOR and CO2 sequestration applications are presented. Results clearly show that the proposed numerical approach is reliable, robust, and efficient and can be used to determine salt deposition in multi-phase flash problems. Several geometric illustrations and numerical details are used to elucidate key points of the proposed approach. © 2014 The Institution of Chemical Engineers. Published by Elsevier B.V. Asphaltene Deposition Modeling during Natural Depletion and Developing a New Method for Multiphase Flash Calculation

The specific objective of this paper is to develop a fully implicit compositional simulator for modeling asphaltene deposition during natural depletion. In this study, a mathematical model for asphaltene deposition modeling is presented followed by the solution approach using the fully implicit scheme. A thermodynamic model for asphaltene precipitation and the numerical methods for performing f...

Multi-Component-Multiphase Flash Calculations for Systems Containing Gas Hydrates by Direct Minimization of Gibbs Free Energy

The Michelsen stability and multiphase flash calculation by direct minimization of Gibbs free energy of the system at constant temperature and pressure, was used for systems containing gas hydrates. The solid hydrate phase was treated as a solid solution. The fugacities of all components of the hydrate phase were calculated as a function of compositions by the rearranged model of van der Wa...

Investigating the Effects of Mass Transfer and Mixture Non-Ideality on Multiphase Flow Hydrodynamics Using CFD Methods

A numerical framework has been proposed to model the interacting effects of mixture non-ideality and mass transfer on hydrodynamics of a multiphase system using CFD methods.Mass transfer during condensation and vaporization is modeled by chemical potential at the liquid-vapor interface. Species mass transfers are related to the diffusion at the interface which in turn is related to the conc...

Pore-scale modeling of multiphase reactive transport with phase transitions and dissolution-precipitation processes in closed systems.

A pore-scale model based on the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method is developed for multiphase reactive transport with phase transitions and dissolution-precipitation processes. The model combines the single-component multiphase Shan-Chen LB model [X. Shan and H. Chen, Phys. Rev. E 47, 1815 (1993)], the mass transport LB model [S. P. Sullivan et al., Chem. Eng. Sci. 60, 3405 (2005)], and the dissolu...

High Pressure Phase Equilibrium of (Solvent + Salt + CO2) Systems by the Extended Peng-Robinson Equation of State

An extended Peng-Robinson equation of state (EPR-EOS) is used to model the vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) in systems containing (water + NaCl + CO2), (water + methanol + NaCl + CO2), (water + Na2SO4 + CO2) and (water + NH4Cl + CO2). The binary and ternary interaction parameters between salt and solvent are adjusted...
