چکیده

Dehydroascorbic acid is shown to be converted to 2-(threo-l,2,3-trihydroxypropyl)tartronic acid in aqueous alkaline solutions. The structure of the acid was determined by mass spectrometry of its acyclic Me3Si derivative. Mass spectrometric and chromatographic data are compared with those of related compounds. The acid is formed by a benzilic acid rearrangement of the intermediate 2,3-hexodiulosonic acid. The rate of formation at 38°C was studied quantitatively by GC. It increases at increased alkalinity but is significant even at physiological pH. The presence of oxygen does not substantially influence the reaction.

Antiviral effects of ascorbic and dehydroascorbic acids in vitro.

In the present study, ascorbic acid weakly inhibited the multiplication of viruses of three different families: herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), influenza virus type A and poliovirus type 1. Dehydroascorbic acid, an oxidized form of ascorbic acid and hence without reducing ability, showed much stronger antiviral activity than ascorbic acid, indicating that the antiviral activity of ascorbic...

Reaction between dehydroascorbic acid and dialysed lens extract in vitro.

IT is generally accepted that the high concentration of ascorbic acid in the aqueous humour in some species is due to active transfer of this substance from the plasma into the eye by the ciliary epithelium. However, the possibility of ascorbic acid formation in the eye has not been disproved, and Barany and Langham (1955) stated that, in the rabbit, a concentration of 10-14 mg./ml. ascorbic ac...

Efficient transport and accumulation of vitamin C in HL-60 cells depleted of glutathione.

Human myeloid leukemia cells (HL-60) transport only the oxidized form of vitamin C (dehydroascorbic acid) and accumulate the vitamin in the reduced form, ascorbic acid. We performed a detailed study of the role of glutathione in the intracellular trapping/accumulation of ascorbic acid in HL-60 cells. Uptake studies using HL-60 cells depleted of glutathione by treatment with L-buthionine-(S,R) s...

The Diabetogenic Effect of Dehydroascorbic

The chemical properties of these two substances are strikingly similar. Both compounds are irreversibly decomposed under biological conditions. Alloxan has a half life of 1 minute (1) and dehydroascorbic acid has a half life of a few minutes (2). Alloxan is readily reduced to dialuric acid (3) with which it forms alloxantin (3). Dehydroascorbic acid is readily reduced to ascorbic acid (4) and a...

The Journal of Vitaminology 13, 250-254 (1967) Reduction of Dehydroascorbic Acid with Pyruvate Oxidase System Ii. Reduction of Dehydroascorbic Acid with Pyruvate Oxidase Isolated from Pig Heart Muscle1

It was previously reported by the authors (1) that, as long as pyruvate exists in the medium containing E. coli K12, dehydroascorbic acid is reduced , and this re ducing activity is dependent upon a pyruvate oxidase system. The presence of the mechanism of reducing dehydroascorbic acid into ascorbic acid in the bacterial cells would serve the regulation of ascorbic acid, protecting its decompos...
